Best Overall: Holy Stone HS900

Specifications

    • Flight Range: 6 km
    • Obstacle Avoidance: Downward only
    • Weight: <249g

Since its launch in May 2024, the Holy Stone HS900 has taken the under $500 drone market by storm. And rightly so. It is an extremely compact, feature-laden drone that could give serious competition even to some higher-priced DJI models.

Body & Design

Weighing under 249g, this drone is exempt from FAA registration regulations. The frame is made of plastic and feels like it could escape a few minor crashes. Of course, you can’t expect the solid body of a DJI Mavic in this price category!

Camera

The fantastic combination of a 3-axis gimbal, Electronic Image Stabilisation (EIS), and 4K Sony CMOS Sensor camera make this drone ideal for photography enthusiasts.

The Sony 1/2.3 in 48MP has a fixed focus f/2.6 lens. It produces sharp images and clean videos that are good enough for professional use. Both manual and automatic options are available for the exposure setting.

Besides the camera quality, what makes it a great drone is the wide view of FOV 83° that helps shoot wider pictures. That’s the reason I always take this drone when I go trekking and want to capture the landscape in all its glory.

Besides, the drone is able to remain steady even in level-5 wind conditions. Since I live in a windy area, this is a boon as I can fly more often.

Flight Time

The advertised flight time is 30 minutes per battery. But as we all know the drones never deliver on this promise! Luckily, the HS900 does give about 22 minutes if flown in a bit of wind.

Under stable conditions on a new battery, you can expect between 22-25 minutes of flying time.

Flight Range

The drone has a transmission range of 20000 feet or 6 km according to the manual. But when I flew it, I found signal interruptions and a slight lag after 4 km.

Still, the radio transmission of the Holy Stone is far better and more reliable than Wi-Fi. The company claims to have an Upgraded Intelligent Control System that offers more reliability than Wi-Fi and stronger anti-interference capabilities.

Speed

It can fly at speeds of up to 31m/s in the Sports mode. It comes with some cool automatic shot options like Point of Interest, Spiral up, Tap Fly (waypoints), Gesture Selfie, One-key Ascension, and Catapult.

I tested the subject tracking feature, not expecting much from it. But it worked fine for the most part. While not perfect, at this price range, it is acceptable.

It is the Time Lapse and Cruise Control features that set it apart from competitors like Potensic. Cruise Control is an excellent innovation if you are flying a long distance and want to maintain trajectory and speed.

I would’ve given the Time Lapse full marks but it is a bit bumpy. The reason is that unlike in DJI where the feature and drone control are integrated, here the drone is separate from the feature.

Obstacle Avoidance

As with most drones in this price range, the HS900 lacks obstacle control. But it does offer a downward vision system that can determine the ground when there’s no signal.

Ease of Use

The control sticks have the RTH button, speed control, and some other functionalities. The bit that stands out is the small joystick for adjusting the camera settings. I feel it enhances ease of use for beginners.

Verdict:

Beginners, intermediate pilots, and photography enthusiasts will find this drone a steal at this price tag. If you are looking for the best drones under $500 with 4K camera then this is what you need. For more advanced features increase your budget and take a look at the DJI drones.

What customers are saying-

AMAZING picture quality and fantastic video. Great in windy conditions as long as you calibrate the gimbal. And no need to register the drone with the FAA which is a plus. It’s got an easy-to-follow tutorial and has amazing speed and performance for how small it is. It’s easy to control and understand once you get the hang of it!

Best Runner-Up: Potensic ATOM

Specifications

  • Best For: Beginner and intermediate pilots keen on photography
  • Camera Resolution: 48 MP
  • Flight Time: 96 minutes
  • Flight Range: 6 km
  • Obstacle Avoidance: Downward only
  • Weight: 249g

The ATOM is a worthy alternative to the Holy Stone HS900. This compact, palm-sized drone has almost everything the HS900 offers. In fact, before the Holy Stone 900 was released, this was the drone I recommended to people!

Body & Design

Despite being light-weight the drone is extremely sturdy and durable. I can comment on the robustness because I’ve seen it fall from a 40-foot tree unscathed!

For the controller though I wish the screen could be a bit brighter for use in sunny weather. Right now, I have to squint hard to view it if I’m flying in bright sunshine.

Camera

Like the HS900, this is a 3-axis brushless gimbal drone and is very stable. Although it lacks the EIS stabilization provided in the Holy Stone HS900 and the battery drains pretty quickly in high wind speeds.

The camera is a 12MP 1/3-inch Sony CMOS sensor with a fixed f/2.2 aperture. You can tinker with the camera settings to adjust the ISO, Shutter Speed, and White Balance.

What I find a constraint is the slightly narrow FoV of 78°. I prefer cameras that can capture wider landscapes, like the HS900.

Flight Time

If you buy the Fly More package then you get 3 batteries. Each delivers a flying time of approximately 25 minutes.

I end up using all 3 sometimes during my professional shoots but for recreational flying the 20-25 minutes offered by one battery is usually sufficient.

Tip: I’d recommend buying the Fly More Package as the extra 3 batteries come in quite handy. Also, if you want to learn more about drone batteries and how to make it last longer then read our other guide by clicking here.

Flight Range

It has an advertised range of 6 km and is equipped with the Potensic PixSync 3.0. I flew the drone in the countryside to test the claim.

When flying at about 65 meters, I could get a range of only 2600 meters. After this, the signal became choppy, and eventually the RTH was activated.

Considering the countryside is relatively interference-free, I can tell you that the 6km claim is wishful! But since one is obligated by law to fly within VLOS, a range of 2-3 km is sufficient.

Speed

You can enjoy a max speed of 16m/s in sports mode. Compared to the HS900’s 31m/s, those interested in high-speed flying will find this very less.

You may want to keep the speed slow in hot weather as this drone heats up fast. There’s no fan in the unit which exacerbates the problem when flying long hours in hot conditions.

For aerial filming, there is a video mode with an ascent speed of 2m/s and flight speed of 6m/s. I rely on this mode when filming and on the normal mode for photography.

Tip: Play with the pitch speed to make the gimbal movement more cinematic.

Ease of Use

You don’t need to be a professional like me to fly this or take shots. The controls are super easy. It also has Visual tracking and QuickShots like Pull-Away, Rocket, Circle, Spiral, and Boomerang, which can make a professional photographer of anyone!

For beginners afraid of losing the drone, there’s the return-to-home feature which works with just a tap. The enhanced GPS capabilities make it a breeze to set up waypoints.

A word on the customer service- it is very responsive! I was able to reach out to them when I had trouble with the calibration setting. They are quick to respond and offer replacements in case of product issues.

Beginners will find the PotensicPro app quite useful. It displays the altitude, battery life, airspeed, drone orientation, etc., which enhances the ease of flying.

Verdict:

Overall, the drone compares well to the HS900 in many aspects and competes for the best drones under $500 for beginners and professionals category.

Since there isn’t much difference between the pricing of the ATOM and HS900, I’d recommend test-flying the two drones to discover the one best for you.

What customers are saying-

This is the best value drone on the market for anyone who just loves to fly and film, without having to suffer through excessive permissions or too many overly complex features. The Atom is a joy to fly, and the quality of the 4k video at this price point is simply amazing.

Best Budget Drone: Ruko F11 Mini Drone

Specifications

  • Best For: Budget
  • Camera Resolution: 48 MP
  • Flight Time: 96 minutes
  • Flight Range: 6 km
  • Obstacle Avoidance: Downward only
  • Weight: 249g

Photo Credit: Ruko F11 Mini Drone

If you are on a budget then the Ruko F11 Mini drone is one of the affordable drones under $500. It is easy to use for beginners and justifies its price tag.

Body & Design

The F11 is the smallest of the F11 drones line up. It comes fully assembled and the body is made of decent quality plastic. The setup is straightforward, with the usual app download and battery charging and insertion.

Camera

The camera is sometimes a disappointing aspect of budget-friendly drones. And this holds true for the F11. It claims to offer 4K HD resolution but I have my doubts. I was not very happy with the video quality, although the photos were just about okay.

The photo resolution is 3840 x 2160 and there is not much room to play around with the camera settings. Photography enthusiasts will find this a bit frustrating. The photos also compress a lot. You will notice the difference when you switch from the phone to the laptop screen.

The F11 has a 2-axis gimbal and comes with EIS. Coupled with the level 6 wind resistance, you get fairly steady images even in breezy conditions. So no complaints there!

I also noticed a lot of vibration when I tilted the camera. Best to keep it stable while taking video shots. I wish the company would work on their camera quality for a better photography experience.

Tip: You will notice that the photos and videos are automatically visible on your phone gallery. But those are just previews. To get the actual footage you will need to open the app and download them manually.

Flight Time

Like other drones in this category, the flight time stated is the usual 30 minutes. I was able to fly it for 20 minutes in slightly breezy weather. Since the drone is heavier than most (550g) I’m thankful for the spare battery that allows me extra air time.

If you read the manual carefully, the company recommends flying the craft between 50-104°F(10-40°C) weather. The charging time for the battery is approximately 4 hours.

Flight Range

The range claimed by the company is 3 km. But as we all know they seldom adhere to the advertised range! It’s the same with the Ruko F11 MINI.

I was able to fly it in the city till about 800m before there was a problem with the signal. This was understandable considering there were buildings around me.  I haven’t had the chance to fly it in open areas so expect an improvement on this range.

Speed

You can select between the Normal and Sports modes when flying. The former is the default mode of the drone. The maximum speed you can enjoy in this mode is 3.5m/s.

The Sports Mode allows you to speed up to 7m/s. I’d recommend flying in this mode when the conditions are windy or when you need an increased camera tilt.

In both modes, the ascending speed is alright but the descent will test your patience!

Ease of Use

The drone is fairly easy to use. You will find the usual GPS features like Follow Me, Waypoint Flight, and Point of Interest. The one-tap take-off and landing and emergency landing functions are great for beginners.

Users with big hands like me will find the control easy to grip, thanks to the two hands that fold out from the bottom. Another good thing is that the controller is rechargeable, unlike other drones which feature battery-run controls.

The app also aids in better control when flying. I remember Ruko using a generic app previously. But they now have their own app which is equipped with a friendly UI and features access.

What I found weird though is that the manual and app were inconsistent in some of the information rendered. This can be confusing, especially for beginners. I’ll suggest following the app instructions for a better outcome.

Verdict:

I recommend getting the Ruko F11 MINI if you are on a budget. It is a chunky equipment that flies well but falls short on the photography front.

It is amongst the best drones under $500 for beginners who want to test their flying skills before upgrading to higher-priced models.

What customers are saying-

“My first mini-drone, so I did quite a bit of research before buying this one. Mainly I was concerned about losing it or breaking it, so I wanted a return home feature, one that people said a beginner to get used to, and one that was durable. I also wanted one with a decent camera, especially for stills.

The ~$100 drones clearly weren’t sufficient, and I didn’t want to spend $300 or more. This Ruko F11Mini fit the bill and had good reviews. I also saw a bunch of videos of people intentionally crashing the drone, and they were impressed with its surprising ruggedness.”

Best Racer Drone: Walkera Classical F210 3D

Specifications

  • Best For: Racing
  • Camera Resolution: 1 MP Night Vision HD
  • Flight Time: 9-10 minutes
  • Flight Range: 800 m
  • Obstacle Avoidance: No
  • Weight: 0.37kg

Drone racing on your mind? Then the Walkera Classical F210 3D is what I would recommend. Although there is a camera, the drone is specially designed for flying at high speeds.

Body & Design

The drone has a unique bow body design that protects the body in case of crashes. Its body is made of durable carbon fiber that enhances ruggedness.

There is also a protection cover for the motor. Overall there is appropriate protection where needed and it looks equipped to handle a crash.

Camera

Being a racer drone, I did not have much expectations from the camera at this price point. But it doesn’t disappoint on criteria that matter.

While the resolution is very low, you do get HD night vision which is a plus. I’ve flown in cloudy weather and can vouch for the picture clarity. The sensors are photosensitive, meaning they adjust automatically according to brightness.

Another impressive aspect is the 120-degree FoV. As I mentioned earlier, it’s one of the things that I look out for in drone cameras. After all, what’s drone photography without the dramatic impact of a wide lens?

Pro tip: Get yourself an F210 camera mount if you want better resolution.

Flight Time

The drone’s battery is 4S, which means it offers a higher voltage of 16.7V compared to the traditional 3 S batteries with 12.6 V output.

I saw that some Amazon reviews were critical of the battery life of this drone. But let’s be practical. Racer drones on average have a flight time of 5-15 minutes, depending on various factors like weight, speed, etc.

Keeping in mind the pricing and purpose, I find the 5-7 minutes offered by this drone adequate. Besides, FPVs require a lot of concentration, so this flight time suits me just fine.

Do buy the bundle pack that comes with an extra battery, I found it to be cheaper compared to purchasing the battery separately.

Flight Range

The F210 3D offers ultra-long transmission of 800m thanks to its mushroom antennas. This ensures a smooth transmission while flying which is imperative for a racer drone.

I found the response level excellent when performing sharp maneuvers. The RX response for this drone is 5ms, 4 times faster in speed.

I’m quite satisfied on the flight range front and have had no complaints so far in either range or response time.

Speed

Now for the element that matters most in a racer drone. The speed of this craft is very impressive. Although the manufacturer does not mention the top speed anywhere, I was able to take it slightly over 40mph.

You can fly in three modes, with mode 1 being the most tame (and hence no fun!). Mode 3 is where the thrill begins as it zips through the sky. The controls remained steady throughout the flight duration.

Ease of Use

It’s a drone that you can use straight out of the box, and I mean it! All the settings and controls are pre-loaded in the default mode which makes it insanely simple to operate for beginners.

It comes with a DEVO 7 controller with basic functionality and a clutter-free interface.

Although I felt some of the parameters like pitch, horizon, etc., need not be displayed continually on the screen. If you want more advanced features, swap this for the DEVO 10 which has more features.

Since the drone isn’t GPS-stabilized, holding the hover is a bit of a challenge initially. As long as you are flying in the 3D stabilized mode, there aren’t going to be any issues at all.

Verdict:

I’ll say this is a true racer drone both in terms of speed and design. The controls are simple, the response time is good, and it is very beginner-friendly. I’ll highly recommend this drone if you are looking for the best value drones under $500 for racing.

What Customers Are Saying-

The F210 is an amazingly fast drone. It is extremely durable. I ate tree three times the first day and it just shrugged it off. It is not a beginner drone by any means.

It top speeds over 40. My only concern is that it is extremely difficult to just hover for a novice. Solid product, good controller. Stock battery doesn’t last long at all so go ahead and buy three with a double charger. Enjoy.

Buying Guide

To be honest, $500 is not a huge amount for a drone. Therefore, trim your expectations accordingly when searching for drones in this category.

It is hard to find perfect high-quality drones under $500, but some do get close. You may have to compromise on either the camera quality, design, build, controls, etc., given the price constraint.

That said, ensure the drone has basic features like RTH, pre-programmed camera settings, easy-to-use controls, and responsive customer care.

Conclusion

The HolyStone HS900 has almost everything you would look for in a drone priced under $500.

Taking all the important criteria into account, it is my top pick for drones in this category. Hope you enjoyed reading my drones under $500 reviews.

FAQ

The HolyStone HS900 series as well as the Potensic ATOM are spectacular for photography and hence the best camera drones under $500.

Yes. In fact, I’d recommend purchasing drones under $500 to become adept at flying. As listed above, there are plenty of drone options available in this price range.
