Resetting drones varies based on the drone model. Generally, you can use software, a power button, or the reset button.

The software is more user-friendly and lowers the risk of making mistakes when resetting your drone.

Read on to as I provide a step-by-step guide on resetting your drone correctly and successfully.

How to Reset a Drone?

As I have mentioned, different drone models may require different resetting methods.

Some may need specialized software that the drone company provides. In contrast, others may need only a button or switch button to reset.

Before I guide you on how to reset a drone, it’s important to note that all drone data will be lost and cannot be recovered. Hence, you must back up vital data before resetting the drone.

Also, if you encounter an error after initiating the reset process, read the error message for details on resolving it. Otherwise, refer to the user manual or contact the drone company for help.

Below, I will guide you on how to reset a drone like a pro. Using the three mentioned methods:

  • Reset button
  • Power button
  • Software

Read on.

Reset Button

Using the reset button to reset your drone is simple and stress-free. Nevertheless, based on the instructions in the manual guide, you may have to use the reset button and other additional methods for some drones.

However, this method is simple; it takes only a few minutes to reset your drone.

Power Button

  • Ensure the drone has sufficient battery or connect it to a power source.
  • Press and hold the power button for approximately 2 seconds.
  • Once the reset process is initiated, based on your drone model, you’ll either hear a beep sound or see flashing lights.
  • Release the power button and give the drone a few minutes to finish the reset process.
  • Once the process is complete, the drone will restart. You can update any necessary firmware to ensure the drone works perfectly and its security is optimum.

Software

Most modern drones require software instead of a power button or reset button to factory reset.

Such drones, though, require a mobile App or a computer to access the drone’s reset option, which is in its settings.

Using the software provided by the manufacturer is a fast and stress-free method. Moreover, it takes only a few minutes to complete the reset process.

The good thing is that the software is compatible with various Operating Systems (OS), including Mac and Windows.

Besides, the software may also provide other tools necessary for troubleshooting your drone.

Also, using software to reset your drone eliminates software-related issues. Even so, you should only use the provided software by the manufacturer, as each model uses a different software for the reset process.

You might want to reset your drone;

  • After a drone crash
  • If you want to do a firmware upgrade
  • There’s an on-screen warning during a flight
  • There’s an unusual response to the drone’s controls
  • When you want the drone to be registered under new ownership after selling it or giving it to somebody else.

Below, I’ll take you through the process of using software to reset various models.

A Step-By-Step Reset Process for Different Drone Models

As mentioned, you must follow different steps to factory reset various drone models.

Below, I will give you a step-by-step guide on how to reset different drone models, starting with the DJI because it is the most common drone among pilots.

How to Reset a DJI Drone

  • Step 1: Head to the DJI website and scroll to the ‘Popular Software’ section. Based on the drone model you have, download the respective DJI Assistant program.

For example, if you have the DJI Assistant 2 Consumer series, it will be compatible with DJI consumer drones like Mavics, Airs, and Minis.

In contrast, DJI Assistant 2 Enterprise will be compatible with enterprise drones like the Matrice series drones.
  • Step 2: After downloading, for example, the DJI Assistant 2 for Mavic, a dialogue box will pop up; click ‘Continue.’
  • Step 3: A ‘Software License agreement’ dialogue box will pop up. Choose your preferred language and click ‘Continue’ if you agree to the ‘DJI assistant Terms of Use.’

Another dialogue box will pop up asking you to agree or disagree with the ‘Terms of the software license agreement.’ Click ‘Agree’ to continue with the installation process.
  • Step 4: After installation, the DJI assistant will be available on your PC. Click to access it and ‘Agree’ to the Terms of Use.
  • Step 5: Another Dialogue box will pop up. Here, you can allow or deny DJI access to information such as ‘User Account Information,’ ‘Onboard SDK App ID,’ and more, as shown on the screen.

You can leave the buttons ‘Off’ and click ‘Agree’ DJI Privacy policy and then click ‘Next.’
  • Step 6: On the next dialogue box, click on the ‘Join User Experience Improvement Program.’
  • Step 7: The homepage will pop up, so reboot your drone and connect it to the computer using the USB cable your manufacturer provided. Wait a few seconds for the program to detect the drone.
  • Step 8: Once detected, your drone will be available on the ‘DJI Assistant Connected Devices’ screen.
  • Step 9: Next, on the connected devices screen, click on your drone model, and on the left-hand side, click on ‘Firmware update.’

You’ll see a list of the firmware versions. Below it, ‘Restore Factory Default’ settings.
  • Step 10: Once the ‘Restore Factory Defaults’ option appears, click ‘Confirm.’ The reset process will start and end at 100%. Click ‘Complete.’

That’s how easy it is to reset your DJI drone.

  • Step 3: Next, press and hold the power button for 10 to 15 seconds to reset the drone.
  • Step 4: After about 1 minute, the drone will turn off and then on again. It will take about 2 to 3 minutes before the rebooting process is complete.

So, detest the temptation of touching the drone until the booting process ends.

Parting Shot

Always refer to the user guide to be sure of the method you need to use to factory reset the drone successfully.

Also, you should only initiate the reset process if your drone has enough battery power. Therefore, please wait until it’s fully charged or connect it to a power source before resetting.
