DJI Mavic Mini vs. Xiaomi Fimi X8

I am a big fan of mini drones and have owned quite a few in my drone piloting career. They are small, very portable, and often easy to use.

Two drones I have used and would like to help you choose between them are the Mavic Mini and the Xiaomi Fimi X8.

The significant difference between them is the flight range. Mavic Mini has a 2.5 miles (4 km) range, while Xiaomi Fimi X8 has more than double the range of 6 miles (9km).

The wider range is suitable for missions in extensive areas. Also, the Fimi X8 has a significantly higher video resolution of 4K than the DJI Mini’s 2.7K.

Both drones are easy to use and offer value for your money.

DJI Mavic Mini vs. Xiaomi Fimi X8 Mini V2: Features Detailed Comparison

DJI Mavic Mini and Xiaomi Fimi X8 Mini V2 are similar in some aspects and differ in others.

We’ll compare them based on range, battery life, speed and maneuverability, camera quality, value for money, and ease of use.

Read on.

Flight Range

Also known as signal transmission distance, flight range depends on local regulations and environmental conditions.

A drone’s signals transit farthest where there are no obstacles and interference and to the point the law allows.

DJI Mavic Mini has a maximum range of about 2.5 miles (4km). This is good enough since you may not have to fly that far from the controller.

And if you do, it does have an automatic RTH, so you can initiate an automated return of your device to the take-off place once the drone loses connection with the controller.

Xiaomi Fimi X8 V2’s flight range is 6 miles (9km), more than double its DJI Mavic counterpart. It’s an improvement from the 8km of the Fimi X8 V1.

The wide coverage is ideal for extended tasks and it also means you will get better performance in areas with interference compared to a drone with shorter range like the Mavic Mini.

Battery Life

Flight modes and the flying surroundings determine how long your drone stays in the air (flight time) after fully charging it.

Also, how frequently you use the battery and how well you maintain it determines its life expectancy.

The maximum flight time of the DJI Mavic Mini is 30 minutes, with about 27 minutes in real life.

Mavic Mini’s Intelligent Flight Battery has a 2400 mAh capacity, with a voltage of 7.2 V and a maximum charging voltage of 8.4 V.

Xiaomi Fimi X8 V2 has 31 flight time minutes, with 29 minutes in real life. The drone has two types of battery: Intelligent Flight Battery and Intelligent Flight Battery Plus.

The former has a 2200 mAh capacity, with a voltage of 7.7 V and a maximum charging voltage of 8.8 V. 3100 mAh is the capacity of the latter battery, with a voltage of 7.2 V and a maximum charging voltage of 8.4 V, giving you increased flight time of 37 minutes.

Camera Quality

The two drones differ significantly in camera capability. DJI Mavic Mini has a 2.7K image resolution, while Xiaomi Fimi X8 Mini V2 has a 4K at 30fps resolution.

While the DJI Mavic Mini produces casual images, the Xiaomi Fimi X8 produces high dynamic range (HDR) ones, which will be applicable in more professional scenarios.

DJI Mavic Mini shoots JPEG photos (4000 × 3000p), while its Fimi X8 counterpart shoots JPEG + RAW(4000 × 3000p) ones.

Thus, Mavic Mini is ideal for beginners as they don’t have to edit their photos in post-processing.

Xiaomi Fimi X8 Mini V2 4K HDR camera makes images look better, depending on what time you take them.

It exposes an image’s light and dark spots, giving it a professional look with better dynamic coverage.

Our focus drones have varying bitrates: The amount of information a camera can process in an interval.

We have 40Mbps for Mavic Mini and 100Mbps for Fimi X8. Meaning the latter produces m.

Speed and Maneuverability

Both drones fly extremely fast, with only an insignificant difference. However, the DJI Mavic Mini has three categories of speed depending on the specific mode: Position (P), Sport (S), or CineSmooth (C).

DJI Mavic Mini maximum flight speeds are 13m/s, 8m/s, and 4m/s for S, P, and C modes, respectively.

The maximum ascent speeds are 4m/s, 2m/s, and 1.5m/s, while the maximum descent speeds are 3m/s, 1.8m/s, and 1 m/s for the three modes, respectively.

Also, the Mavic Mini has a maximum wind speed resistance of 8m/s.

On the other hand, Xiaomi Fimi X8 Mini V2 has a maximum speed of 16m/s (can stretch to 18m/s) in an obstacle and interference-free, non-windy area.

It has an ascent speed of 5m/s and a descent speed of 3.5m/s. Its maximum wind speed resistance is 10.7m/s.

The two drones are lightweight, making them highly maneuverable.

Obstacle Avoidance

DJI Mavic Mini and Xiaomi Fimi X8 V2 don’t have obstacle avoidance sensors. Although they look like they have one in front, they don’t!

It’s simply a design-enhancing feature to make them look similar to those with sensors.

The drone’s downward sensors aid with stability and positioning. Hence, we recommend using the 360-degree Propeller Guard when flying these quadcopters for propellers’ protection and safe flying.

The lack of obstacle avoidance features may put on a lower edge among the other beginner drones as they lower the confidence of newbies.

Winner: None

Ease of Use

Apart from the obstacle sensors ‘dent,’ the two models offer an intuitive and simple user experience, making them suitable for starters and experts.

Customer reviews reveal that the DJI Mavic Mini is easy to learn and fly. It has a Flight Tutorial to help you get started quickly and safely.

Mavic Mini’s Return-to-Home function instructs your device to return to the take-off point when needed.

The compact but powerful drone is an excellent creative companion, capturing desired moments effortlessly.

It’s 250g weight allows you to fly it in the U.S. and Canada without registration with the government.

Things are no different for the Xiaomi Fimi X8 model. Most customers are happy with the super stable video, excellent responsiveness, various flight modes, and change of weather pattern detection.

Its ultralight and foldable design is also a plus! However, some say that quality control is a significant drawback.

Winner: Both

Value for Money

The two Mini drones give you value for money. DJI Mavic Mini is a small, lightweight, and valuable drone in its category of those on offer in 2024.

Additionally, it’s the quietest, most straightforward, and most fun to use. These features make the pocket-size drone the photographers’ favorite, especially newbies interested in aerial photography.

Xiaomi Fimi X8 V2 offers value for money. The two battery options allow you to choose the one that fits your flight time requirements and legal requirements in areas where drones are regulated based on weight.

Also, Fimi X8’s intelligent flight modes make the model highly versatile. Photos and videos are top-notch, as the modes allow you to adjust settings for a personalized experience. It’s a budget-friendly drone for most enthusiasts.

Winner: Both

The DJI Mavic Mini Vs. Xiaomi Fimi X8 Mini V2 review brings to our attention the remarkable features of the mini drone categories.

You don’t have to break the bank for your recreational drone flying efforts. They’re pocket-friendly drones that won’t compromise on the image quality.
