5 Best Waterproof Drones: My In-Depth Analysis

Best Overall Waterproof Drone: SwellPRO SplashDrone 4

Specifications

  • Waterproof: Yes (IP67)
  • Camera Resolution: 12MP
  • Flight Time: 30 minutes
  • Flight Distance: 5 km
  • Obstacle Avoidance: NA
  • Weight: 2.18 kg

After using the SwellPro SplashDrone 4, I must say, it’s probably the best waterproof drone I’ve flown.

The drone’s tough, seawater-proof, rigid fuselage is made out of marine-grade ABS to withstand wave impact, and every unit is factory-sealed to the slightest details and tested for the air-pressure for 100% waterproof guarantee.

The IP67 rating is a huge advantage. I took it out in the heavy downpour (not too heavy, frankly) and even landed it on the water without worrying about damage.

Its Power-Flip feature is also incredible, helping it “automatically” flip over with the press of a button. I didn’t have to do anything much! SplashDrone 4’s 12MP camera with a fully water-resistant 4K gimbal delivers sharp, high-quality photos and videos.

The 3-axis gimbal, although not very great, does an OK job in keeping everything stable, even in rough weather. But I liked the underwater shots.

Talking about the battery life, a 100% charge gives you about 30 minutes of flight time. In my opinion, this much time is sufficient for longer sessions, letting you explore more before rushing back to charge.

I’ve been particularly impressed with the drone’s 5 km flight distance. It lets you cover a vast area without losing signal, and the SDFly App makes it easy to see exactly what the drone’s seeing in real-time. The Follow-Me mode is highly beneficial while boating—it keeps the camera focused on you the entire time.

Finally, the drone’s weight (2.18 kg) helps it stay stable, even in winds up to 31 mph. Credit goes to its Level 7 wind resistance. While you’ll miss obstacle avoidance with the SwellPro SplashDrone 4, its durability and performance in tough conditions make it a must-have for anyone who loves capturing outdoor adventures.

What Other Customers Have to Say About SwellPro SplashDrone 4?

“I love the security of my SplashDrone 4. It’s a good machine. After losing a Phantom to the sea, I feel so much more secure flying the SplashDrone 4 over water. BTW, the SplashDrone 4 has the function of power flip.”

Best Waterproof Drone For Underwater Fun: PowerVision PowerDolphin

Specifications

  • Waterproof: IPX8
  • Camera Resolution: 12MP
  • Flight Time: 2 hour
  • Flight Distance: 800 m
  • Obstacle Avoidance: NA
  • Weight: 5 lbs

PowerVision has limited drone models in its lineup, and this PowerDolphin is its top-selling product.

At first glance, it’s an impressive piece of kit, with a sleek design and a waterproof wide-angle 12MP camera that shoots in 4K. The camera’s ability to capture both above and below the water, thanks to its 220° rotating arm, is a big plus for me. And yes, you!

The PowerDolphin’s 64 Wh battery gives you up to two hours of run time in displacement mode, which is perfect for slow cruising and filming underwater.

However, at full speed (i.e., 8 knots), you get around 20 minutes. It’s pretty fast for its size, making it fun to zip around the bay, but it does take some practice to get used to the controls—especially in crowded areas.

The remote controller connects to your phone via the PowerVision app, letting you enjoy live RAW footage, which is a cool feature.

That said, it’s not without its drawbacks. Launching it can be tricky since the propellers don’t start until it’s in the water, and the auto-return feature doesn’t account for obstacles, so be careful near moorings!

While the underwater footage is great for calm waters, above-water video can get shaky unless conditions are perfectly flat.

Overall, it’s a fun gadget, but it feels more like a high-end toy than a serious tool for boat safety or photography. It’s perfect if you want to capture unique angles, but at this price, it’s mostly for those who love their tech toys.

What Other Customers Have to Say About PowerVision PowerDolphin?

“The PowerDolphin is the pinnacle of wireless water-based drones, with unmatched range, speed, battery life, and features.”

Best Waterproof Drone With Longest Range: Autel EVO Max 4T

Specifications

  • Waterproof: IP43
  • Camera Resolution: 50MP, 48MP, 640 X 512 pixels
  • Flight Time: 42 minutes
  • Flight Distance: 12.4 miles
  • Obstacle Avoidance: Binocular Vision System, Millimeter Wave Radar Technology
  • Weight: 1620 g

The EVO Max 4T by Autel Robotics is an excellent choice for professionals in emergency services, search and rescue, and mapping.

Its 1620g weight may make it heavier than typical consumer drones, but it’s compact and portable, especially considering the powerful feature it brings to your table. Take the example of its foldable design, making transportation and storage easier.

One of the main highlights of the drone is its triple-camera system: wide-angle, zoom, and infrared. The zoom camera, with its 160x range and optical zoom up to 10x, makes capturing distant details a breeze. While the digital zoom does lose quality, it’s still highly functional for practical purposes like search and rescue.

The thermal camera, though lower resolution (640 X 512), is ideal for locating heat signatures in challenging environments. Whether it’s for surveillance, mapping, or emergency operations, this imaging capability is invaluable.

Coming to the wide-angle camera it produces 50MP JPEGs and 12MP RAW files, perfect for gathering high-resolution images of larger areas.

The 42-minute flight time gives you plenty of operational flexibility, though in high winds, it drops slightly, which is expected. The range is another highlight; with a distance of up to 12.4 miles, I could cover vast areas, ideal for mapping and surveying tasks.

The obstacle avoidance system, combining binocular vision and millimeter wave radar technology, ensures a safe flight, even in cluttered or GPS-compromised areas.

The Autel Smart Controller is another excellent addition with a large 7.9-inch touchscreen that’s clear and easy to navigate, allowing you to view multiple camera feeds. The battery life of 4.5 hours ensures long work sessions without interruption.

Finally, the IP43 rating offers dust and water resistance, making it durable for outdoor use in moderate weather conditions. Overall, the EVO Max 4T is a well-rounded, powerful drone for demanding professional environments.

What Other Customers Have to Say About Autel EVO Max 4T?

“I’ve used the drone a few times now. The picture clarity of the drone is awesome, the inferred is amazing, and 100 yards up, we can zoom in on a bunny rabbit and watch its ears flap. Shipping was great.”

  • Flight Time: Up to 60 minutes
  • Flight Distance: NA

Chasing Dory may be a cute, little drone, but don’t get fooled by its size. Dory is super easy to carry around—lightweight and compact enough to fit in your backpack.

The 1080p HD camera with a wide f/1.6 lens is perfect for exploring underwater, and the two built-in headlights at the front really help brighten up the view without scaring off the fish. Just be mindful not to overuse the lights, as I noticed they tend to drain the battery a bit quicker.

What I love the most about Dory is how kid-friendly it is. You just need to connect the Wi-Fi buoy to your phone, and you’re good to go!

Your kids will have a lot of fun controlling Dory while you manage the camera. This is possible due to the dual play mode—a fantastic feature that lets one person control the movement, while the other captures stunning footage.

Dory’s real-time camera feed makes ice fishing more fun, as you can actually see what’s going on under the surface. Plus, it’s a great way to record snorkeling adventures or pool parties. With 60 minutes of battery life and IP68 waterproofing, Dory is a must-have for any water-loving family!

What Other Customers Have to Say About Chasing Dory?

“This neat, little Chasing Dory is the perfect underwater drone for scuba divers and ocean lovers alike. This palm-sized device offers 1080p Full HD footage with a real-time viewing option, app remote control, portable carrying case, Wi-Fi buoy, and 49 ft. tether.”

Best Waterproof Drone for Fishing: SwellPro Fisherman FD3

  • Waterproof: IP67
  • Camera Resolution: 4K
  • Flight Time: Up to 27 minutes
  • Flight Distance: 1300 m
  • Obstacle Avoidance: NA
  • Weight: 2.54 kg

If you’re a professional angler or prefer angling in your free time, this SwellPro Fisherman FD3 is an ideal investment you won’t want to miss!

It’s an ultimate fishing drone with a camera, consolidating power-efficiency from FD1, ease-of-use from SD4, and enhanced reliability from MAX.

With its IP67 splashproof rating, you need not worry about flying it near the ocean or landing it on water. It can even float and take off again, which is a huge advantage when you’re fishing in unpredictable conditions.

FD3’s camera is also pretty good. The footage comes out clear and detailed, which is of great help in spotting fish or key structures like sandbars and channels. Plus, the camera tilts up and down, giving you a wide field of view to ensure precise bait placement.

What sets SwellPro Fisherman FD3 apart is its ability to carry up to 4.4 lbs (or 2 kg) of bait. This way, you can drop multiple hooks and baits in one go and drastically increase your chances of catching more fish. The 1300 m range, however, didn’t impress me much and could have been better.

The auto-drop and return feature is another lifesaver, and all anglers will give it a thumbs up after learning what it does. If the battery goes below a certain level or if you start losing signal, the drone will automatically drop the bait and fly back to the shore.

The Fisherman FD3 is also incredibly stable, even in Level 7 winds (up to 40 mph), thanks to its powerful propulsion system. With its slide-in battery system, you can quickly swap batteries and get back to flying. Overall, this drone has made fishing more efficient, fun, and successful!

What Other Customers Have to Say About SwellPro Fisherman FD3?

“Fisherman FD3 is the most easy-to-use and reliable waterproof fishing drone ever made by SwellPro.”

How Do I Choose the Best Waterproof Drone?

Finding the best waterproof drone can be challenging and time-consuming. However, by focusing on key aspects like these, you can easily identify the ideal model that meets your needs.

Price

When selecting the best waterproof drone, price is a crucial factor. Drones can range from budget-friendly to high-end models. I recommend setting a budget and finding a drone that offers the best features within that range.

While cheaper options might save money upfront, investing in a more expensive model often provides better build quality, enhanced durability, and advanced features like longer battery life or superior camera capabilities. The choice is yours!

Size & Weight

The size and weight of a drone impact its portability and flying experience. Smaller drones are typically more lightweight and easier to transport, making them ideal for casual users or travelers.

Larger drones, while bulkier, often offer better stability, increased battery life, and more advanced features.
Consider the drone’s size based on your flying environment and how you plan to use it, ensuring it meets your specific needs.

Battery Life

Battery life is a key consideration for any drone, especially if you plan to use it for extended sessions. I look for drones with a battery life of at least 20-30 minutes per charge. This ensures longer flights without frequent interruptions.

Additionally, check the battery’s recharge time and consider purchasing extra batteries if you plan on using the drone for extended periods.

Waterproof Rating

A drone’s waterproof rating is vital if you’ll be flying in wet conditions or underwater. I look for models with a high IP rating, such as IP68, which offers robust protection against water damage. This rating ensures the drone can handle rain, splashes, or even submersion without compromising its functionality.

Always verify the waterproof specifications to ensure the drone fits your specific needs. Don’t forget to check out my blog on how to waterproof a drone at home for an extra layer of protection against water.

Obstacle Avoidance

Obstacle avoidance technology helps prevent crashes and improves the overall flying experience. I prefer drones equipped with advanced sensors that detect and navigate around obstacles, such as trees or buildings.

Features like automatic braking and collision warnings enhance safety and make flying in complex environments easier. This technology is especially useful for beginners or when flying in unfamiliar terrain.

Camera

The camera quality of a waterproof drone is essential for capturing high-resolution images and videos. I look for drones with high-definition cameras that offer features like 4K resolution, multi-axis gimbals, and a wide FOV of at least 120°.

A good camera enhances your ability to take clear, detailed photos and videos from the air, making it perfect for aerial photography, videography, or even live streaming.

Best Waterproof Drones – FAQs

Absolutely! Waterproof drones do exist and are designed to withstand exposure to water. These drones are built with specialized seals and coatings, as I’ve discussed at the very beginning of this article, to protect their internal components from moisture.

If you’re planning to buy one for yourself, look for UAVs with high IP ratings, such as IP67 or IP68, to ensure they are truly waterproof and durable in wet environments.

Drones designed to land on water typically have sort of flotation devices or specially designed waterproof bodies. Models like the PowerVision PowerEgg X and the Chasing Dory are examples of drones that can safely land on and take off from water.

These drones are equipped with features to ensure stable operation on water surfaces, making them suitable for aquatic environments and water-based activities.

Waterproof DJI drones aren’t a thing yet! The Chinese company hasn’t introduced any waterproof models in their main lineup.

However, some DJI drones, like the
DJI Matrice series, can be adapted for water use with third-party waterproofing kits or modifications.

For specific waterproof or water-resistant capabilities, I suggest checking the latest models or consider drones from other brands designed explicitly for water-related activities.

Yes! The TJ-FlyingFish is one fine example of an “amphibious” drone that can operate both underwater and in the air. Developed by scientists at Shanghai Research Institute in China, this innovative drone can dive underwater and also function as a quadcopter, seamlessly transitioning between aquatic and aerial environments.

Conclusion

Choosing the best waterproof drone involves considering factors such as price, size, battery life, waterproof rating, obstacle avoidance, and camera quality.

The top five waterproof drones discussed above stand out for their exceptional durability and adaptability in wet conditions. These models are designed to excel in both aquatic and aerial environments, making them perfect for diverse applications.

By choosing one of these top-rated drones, you ensure reliable performance and peace of mind, whether you’re navigating through rain or capturing stunning underwater scenes.
