The drone build is very similar to the Mini 2. The design is compact and the propellers fold out for flight. The angular body with propellers folded can easily fit into one’s palm!

Camera

The Mini is a fun, entry-level drone that also offers good picture quality. The 12 MP camera supports 2.7K video at up to 30fps with 8-bit SDR color.

The image formats you can use are both JPG and RAW DNG for photographs. This gives photography enthusiasts room to play around with developing stellar photos.

The catch? The camera can record in a 16:9 ratio only which makes it great for YouTube but unsuitable for other social media platforms like Instagram (which needs a 4:5 aspect ratio). That said, it is definitely amongst the best drones for photography under 300.

I suggest you keep the auto exposure bracketing on, especially for high-contrast scenes. That way you will have a selection of photos to choose from, each at a different exposure.

In-drone charging is supported by the Mini 2. It charges using a regular USB-C cable and takes 90 minutes to fully charge.

Flight Range

When it comes to range, the MINI 2SE is very impressive. Although one will seldom fly 10 km, which is the drone’s range, the ability to do so is reassuring.

This enhanced range is due to DJI’s sophisticated O2 system which supports 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz frequency bands. In simple terms, you get to enjoy interference-resistant transmission, thanks to the automatic frequency switching.

Speed

This little drone can whiz at a max speed of 29mph in the Sports mode. Given its tiny size, I would not recommend flying in the sports mode in areas with trees and other obstructions unless you are a deft pilot.

Other than the Sports mode, there are the Position and CineSmooth Modes. The Position mode is apt for beginners who are learning the ropes of drone piloting.

The drone flies at a max speed of 13m/s in this mode. However ensure that the GPS signal is strong as the drone relies heavily on the GPS to stabilize itself in this mode.

Body & Design

Despite its weight, this drone doesn’t look very bulky. It has a sleek design with folding arms and a decent built quality. It measures around 6.4 x 3.5 inches when the arms are folded.

Camera

The 4K camera of the HS720G is quite basic, especially when compared to the Mini. The camera has a Sony sensor and 5x zoom which offer clear images despite the low resolution.

The ability to capture wide videos with the 120-degree FoV is what sets this drone apart from others. However, you will notice a barrel distortion when you tilt the camera. The camera tilt offered in the drone is up to 70 degrees and hence you cannot point it straight down.

Unlike the Mini, you have limited control over the camera settings which may bother photography enthusiasts. You can only adjust the white balance, brightness, ISO, and saturation. There is no option of RAW image format either.

Considering this drone only has a 2-axis gimbal (unlike Mini’s 3-axis mechanical stabilization system), the images are decent. If you are not keen on photo editing or enhanced image sharpness, then the camera delivers.

Battery Life & Flight Time

The drone uses a LiPo battery that gives you a flight time of 20-25 minutes on a full charge. It may sound less but when you are flying an FPV this duration is sufficient.

The maximum distance you can fly this craft is 999 meters. I’d say it is safe to use up to 500 m only. Beyond that, the signal becomes choppy and eventually the RTH feature gets activated.

The reason for this could perhaps be that it relies on a Wi-Fi connection between the phone, controller, and drone. Since the presence of obstructions like trees and buildings can impact the Wi-Fi signal, it is best you keep the drone close.

Speed

There are two speed settings on the HS720G- Tripod and Sport. Tripod compares to the CineSmooth in the DJI Mini 2 and is quite steady for taking videos, although I feel it could be slower.

The sports mode is very zippy at 30mph but since the drone isn’t as light as the Mini, one feels confident in piloting it. 

Obstacle Avoidance

There is no obstacle avoidance on this drone and no downward infrared sensors either. This makes me wonder what good are features like Follow Me or RTH in the absence of obstacle avoidance.

Ease of Use

I’ll say the HS720 is fairly easy to use. All that is needed is to download the Ophelia FLY app, calibrate the compass, and pair it with the phone to get it in the air. 

However, you will need to register the drone on the FAA website before you fly as it weighs more than 249 grams.

The controls are intuitive and respond well. A problem I faced was that due to the large size of my phone, the speed controls got hidden when flying.

To fly this craft and shoot accurately you may need practice since it is imperative to keep the eyes on the screen when flying a FPV. It took me time to get used to looking at the screen and not at the drone physically when piloting it.

Verdict:

Get the HS720G if you are not too picky about image quality and want a point-and-shoot drone that is easy to fly. It makes for a great entry-level FPV that packs enough features at the price range.

Body & Design

The first thing you notice on the RUKO U11 Pro are the slightly large propellers which contribute to a stable flight. The propeller arms also look solid and feel like they can withstand minor crashes.

I liked the all-black look which gives a premium feel to the drone. The same goes for the controller which features a shiny black panel and two joysticks which are comfy on the thumb.

Camera

At this price point, I did not have any expectations from the camera and the drone proved me right. The 4K camera mounts on a 2-axis gimbal and boasts a vibration-damping system which claims to offer smooth footage.

Despite this, you will find that the videos are a bit shaky at high speeds. The clarity is right for the price you are paying. I have seen far worse in higher-priced models sometimes!

What’s good is that the drone has a level 5 wind resistance which makes it stable for taking shots in windy conditions.

Battery Life & Flight Time

The flight time of 26 minutes is accurate in stable conditions. I flew it on a fairly windy day while capturing a 4k video and the battery died in 12 minutes.

The good thing is that the drone comes with 2 batteries which total up to give you around 40-50 minutes of flight time. This is good especially when you are practicing flying and want to keep going.

Flight Range

The RUKO U11 promises a range of 500m and delivers in near-perfect conditions. Although the transmission uses a Wi-Fi signal it doesn’t get patchy even at altitudes of 400m.

Reliable transmission is more important than range for beginners because you want to be in control at all times. This drone does that flawlessly.

While some people might complain that the range is too low as compared to other drones, I find it ideal for those who want to learn how to pilot a drone.

Speed

Here too, don’t expect the swiftness of the Mini or Holystone 720. I flew it at a top speed of 13mph and was impressed with the control I had over it.

The craft comes with a double altitude hold technology that keeps it hovering without having to touch the controller. I tried flying it indoors to test the hover stability without GPS and it performed well.

Body & Design

When I saw the Atom SE it reminded me of the DJI Mavic Mini in terms of design. It does not have a very plasticky feel and looks like a premium drone that can withstand minor crashes.

The remote is ergonomically designed and accommodates my Note 20 Ultra perfectly.

This little craft is very light (just 245 g) and once you fold the front and rear propellers it is small enough to fit your jacket pocket! The total dimensions of the folded drone are just 3.5 x 5.6 x 2.3 inches. That’s why I feel it is the perfect travel companion.

Camera

The 4K UHD camera gives you an ultra-clear resolution. It translates to a display resolution of 3840x2160p. It is capable of shooting 4K/30fps video with a FOV of 118 degrees making it amongst the best drones with camera under 300.

Most of the camera settings on the ATOM SE are automatic except for the exposure. This means you cannot manually set the ISO, white balance, or shutter speed. While that shouldn’t bother beginners, it could devoid photography enthusiasts the chance to capture shots the way they like.

The camera can tilt vertically from +20 to -90 degrees but you still cannot point it straight at the ground.

In the absence of a gimbal, stability is provided through Potensic’s ShakeVanish electronic stabilization. Along with that, there’s the PixSync 2.0 which in my opinion does a good job of giving smooth and consistent videos.

Battery Life & Flight Time

The two intelligent 2500mAh batteries you get in the pack give you almost 40-50 minutes of flight time. This means you don’t have to worry about the battery dying when travelling.

Of course, if you shoot in 4K in weather that is less than perfect then the battery life drops significantly. The same applies to flying at high speeds for a long time.

Flight Range

All the above drones I’ve mentioned rely on a Wi-Fi transmission (barring the Mini SE). But the Potensic Atom SE uses a direct connection from the phone with an OTG cable.

For some, the wire connection may be outdated, but to me, it signifies a far more reliable connection than an erratic Wi-Fi signal.

The advertised range is 4 km. I haven’t had the chance to test the limits but I did do 2.5 km and was satisfied with the connection quality. Just remember to avoid keeping any 2.4GHz device around to prevent interference.

Speed

Video, Normal and Sport are the three flight modes you get on the Potensic Atom. And boy this thing is powerful and zippy! I certainly didn’t expect it to whiz at 16m/s in just 2.8s! As an experienced flyer, I wouldn’t mind getting this drone just to enjoy the thrill of speed and range!

I would not advise beginners to fly in the sports mode though since the controls are very sensitive and need practice.

The video mode is tailor-made to give the pilot a combination of slow speed and stability for cinematic captures. There’s also a beginner mode that limits speed and distance so you can focus on learning to manoeuvre.

Obstacle Avoidance

Another drone with the RTH and Follow Me features minus obstacle avoidance! However, there are two downward sensors- the Downward Positioning System (same as DJI Mini SE) and the ToF Sensor.

Both work in sync to achieve high-precision positioning as well as better controls even when there is no GPS signal. Another added bonus for beginners!

Ease of Use

The set-up process for the Potensic Atom takes a bit of time and thorough manual reading. Once the updates on the remote, camera, and drone are installed, you need to get the calibration right. And your drone is ready to fly!

A thoughtful touch by Potensic is the three types of adaptor cables they offer -Micro/Type C/Lightning- for connecting with different phones. It does save the hassle of running around looking for the right one!

The controls are easy to manage though I wish the camera button was an infinity scrolling wheel instead of the present rocker wheel one. It just gives more smoothness when adjusting the tilt during photography.
