Camera

The DJI Air 3 comes with the first dual-primary camera system in the Air series.

While its main 24mm f/1.7 wide-angle camera is inspired from the Mini 3 Pro, the 70mm f/2.8 telephoto camera is exactly the same as on the Mavic 3 Pro. Both cameras use a 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor and fixed apertures, but there’s an option to add ND filters for $99.

An improved 3-axis mechanical gimbal allows the camera to tilt from 90° down to 60° up for a smooth transition, capturing both horizontal and vertical shots. The sensors support up to 4K100 video with 10-bit color in D-Log, HLG, or standard profile, which is a plus point.

For the stills, you can either shoot images in 8-bit JPG or 12-bit DNG formats at 12/48MP resolution. Opting for 48MP gives you larger files with more detail, but I find the downsampled 12MP photos to be sharper overall.

Flight Time

Air 3 offers an airtime worth 46 minutes with its 4241 mAh Li-ion 4S battery—a good increase of 48% compared to the (now discontinued) DJI Mavic Air.

This means your aircraft won’t give up in the middle of the flight, giving you the freedom to cover long journeys and get the shots you want, all during a single flight.

The new battery charging hub is finally something I was craving for a long time. Unlike the traditional charging hubs, this one supports DJI’s innovative power transfer function that transfers the remaining power from multiple batteries to the battery with the highest remaining power.

The result?

You get a fully charged battery every time, especially in situations with limited charging options.

Flight Distance

The DJI Air 3 can travel up to 32 km from the RC controller, which is incredible for capturing those breathtaking, far-off landscapes.

For testing, I took it over a nearby canyon, and the range allowed me to explore areas I’d never seen before. The connection stayed stable and strong the whole time, giving me peace of mind while I navigated.

For the video transmission range, it’s approx. 20 km. DJI’s premium O4 HD video transmission system empowers Air 3 with increased stability, and a 1080p/60fps max-quality live feed for ultra-smooth viewing. You really gotta fly the Air 3 once to experience all this, mere words can’t describe it.

Speed

I’m really impressed by this 720g drone’s speed, despite the size it comes in. It can zip around horizontally at up to 46-47 mph, which is pretty thrilling to see in live action.

Whether I’m flying it for fun or capturing fast-paced scenes, the speed is more than enough for my needs. It responds quickly to controls, making it easy to maneuver even at high speeds.

Plus, with the advanced stabilization, the footage remains smooth and steady.

Obstacle Avoidance

This may sound like clickbait, but it’s true.

The Air 3 features DJI’s most advanced multi-directional obstacle avoidance system, as far as I know. It constantly scans in real-time to detect obstacles from all directions, helping you avoid crashes when flying low to the ground or exploring an area full of trees.

Once any such object is identified, the 5th-generation Advanced Pilot Assistance System (APAS) quickly takes over. It intelligently calculates the best flight path to avoid the detected obstacle, ensuring a smooth flight for a safer overall flight experience.

The quadcopter’s GPS hardware also improves safety. It actively tracks its location and altitude, guiding it to home in case of a communication breakdown.

What Other Customers Have to Say About DJI Air 3?

“One of the standout features of the DJI Air 3 is its dual-camera system. The drone has both a wide-angle and a mid-telephoto camera, allowing you to capture sharp 4K footage with standard, flat, or HDR color profiles. The cameras are gimbal-stabilized and have a 60-degree upward tilt, which makes it easy to capture smooth and stable footage.”

Best DJI Alternative: Autel Evo Lite+

Specifications

  • Camera Resolution: 20 MP
  • Flight Time: 40 minutes
  • Flight Distance: 24 km
  • Video Transmission Range: 12 km
  • Obstacle Avoidance: Ultra-wide obstacle avoidance camera sensors
  • Weight: 835g

Camera

Camera is probably the biggest highlight of the Lite+ compared to its predecessors, including the sub-par Lite.

The Lite+ uses a 1-inch CMOS sensor and a 20 MP camera to capture a 29mm angle with an “adjustable” f/2.8-f/11 aperture. This setup ensures you get clear, high-quality stills and videos with great flexibility in different lighting conditions.

Videos can be recorded at 6K at 24fps, 25fps, or 30fps, or at 4K or 2.7K at up to 60fps. If you want to shoot at 120fps, you would need to downsample the resolution to 1080p or even lower. This doesn’t make much sense to me, so it can be avoided.

For the zoom, 2x and 4x are two available options. In most cases, 2x should suffice for you. It brings distant subjects into clearer view without interfering much with the quality. The exact opposite happens when you switch to 4x digital zoom.

Flight Time

The battery life of Evo Lite+ drone is nearly 30% higher than Air 2S, which means an impressive airtime of 40 minutes (max) per complete charge.

Flight Distance

Autel Robotics’s strongest image transmission system, the Autel SkyLink, powers this Lite+. It offers an impressive HD video transmission range of up to 12 km and quality of 2.7K/30FPS.

If that’s not all, this SkyLink system also takes care of signal interferences from surrounding objects to give you professional-level footage.

Obstacle Avoidance

While the Autel Evo Lite+ lacks upward- or side-facing sensors as the DJI, its ultra-wide obstruction avoidance cameras aren’t less competent either.

These cameras give the EVO Lite+ a 150° front field of view, eliminating more blindspots for a safe flight. Nevertheless, I found their performance quite average in low-lit conditions. This doesn’t leave a nice impression for a drone that costs almost $1400!

What Other Customers Have to Say About Autel Evo Lite+?

“This is a great drone and captures outstanding quality photos and video. I love the HDR video, and the detail is amazing. Get extra memory cards, though. I had a recording for 1 minute and 4 seconds on 6k mode – it wrote 934 MB of data during that time. WOW!”

Camera

Mavic 3 Classic’s camera didn’t fail to impress me in my very first flight with it. Sweden-based brand Hasselblad designed the L2D-20c specifically for it, managing to fit a 20MP 4/3-inch CMOS sensor with an adjustable f/2.8-f/11 aperture into such a tiny space.

They’ve kept up their high standards with this one, ensuring both the hardware and software deliver top-notch performance.

What amazed me the most is the fact that every pixel is precisely calibrated to deliver vibrant, natural colors effortlessly. Just pressing the shutter gives you amazing, true-to-life photos, perfect for capturing stunning landscapes without needing any complex editing.

To put into simple words: this camera drone is truly a must-have for every aerial photography enthusiast out there.

Flight Time

46 minutes worth of airtime on a single charge means more time to create and less time worrying about your Mavic 3 Classic’s battery level. But this is only true if you use the original Mavic 3-Series batteries. Other batteries, though compatible, won’t give this much flight time.

Flight Distance

The DJI Mavic 3 Classic is by far the most value-for-money aircraft from the DJI, at least for me. With a 30 km flight range and 15 km transmission range, I can fly much farther and more stably without worrying.

The O3+ transmission system is there to assist me, delivering a 1080p/60fps live feed that matches closely to what the camera records.

This means what I see on my screen is almost identical to the final footage, making the drone super responsive to my controls. It’s perfect for capturing high-quality shots with confidence.

Speed

The drone has got three speed modes: Cine, Normal, and Sport. Cine mode is the slowest of all, perfect for smooth, cinematic shots thanks to its reduced sensitivity.

But don’t let that fool you—Mavic 3 Classic can really move in the Sport mode, hitting up to 47 mph. Normal mode strikes a nice balance of speed, offering a responsive yet steady flight. Each mode has its own perks, making this drone versatile for any kind of aerial filming you want to do.

Obstacle Avoidance

The Mavic 3 Classic is packed with 6 fisheye sensors and 2 wide-angle sensors, making it super easy for the drone to avoid obstacles from any direction.

These sensors are highly accurate in tracking objects, thus alerting the drone to bypass them quickly. As a result, even absolute beginners can fly safely and confidently.

Best FPV Drone: DJI FPV

Specifications

  • Camera Resolution: 12 MP
  • Flight Time: 20 minutes
  • Flight Distance: 16.8 km
  • Video Transmission Range: 10 km
  • Obstacle Avoidance: Forward and downward obstacle sensing, ToF Sensor
  • Weight: 795g

Camera

Despite being an inexpensive drone, DJI FPV’s image and video quality fulfills “some” of my expectations, if not all.

This sleek and aerodynamic aircraft boasts a smartphone-like 12 MP camera with 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor, coupled with a 14.66mm equivalent lens and fixed f/2.8 aperture for photography and videography.

To put the FPV camera to test, I asked my cousin to record some videos at 50/60fps and 1080p at every possible frame rate, i.e., 50, 60, 100, and 120. The results didn’t disappoint both of us.

In fact, the drone also lets you record in both Standard and D-Cinelike color profiles at up to 120 Mbps. And for footage stabilization, the RockSteady Stabilization feature has got your back. Other FPV drones lack this particular thing!

Flight Time

The 2000mAh capacity Intelligent Flight Battery of the FPV produces an approx. airtime 20 minutes. In my testing though, the actual time fell shy of the company’s claims by four to five minutes.

Flight Distance

The DJI FPV uses the DJI O3 (OcuSync 3.0) Transmission System, allowing it to fly up to 16.8 km horizontally (at sea level, without wind) and transmit video up to 10 km away.

But do you know what amazed me the most? It’s that the FPV automatically switches between 2.4 and 5.8GHz frequencies and supports a video transmission bitrate of up to 50 Mbps. This results in a significant reduction in stutter and compression issues.

In addition, with high-gain antennas, two transmitters, and four receivers, you can count on a stable and reliable video feed every time.

Speed

This DJI FPV rips apart the air in three different modes: Manual, Normal, and Sports.

The N mode is the modest of all, with the maximum speed limit of up to 33 mph. I  find it suitable for casual flying in the backyard, especially when the weather is ready to play spoilsport.

For experienced pilots interested in performing aerial stunts, say, drone racing, the M mode is for you. Its maximum speed goes up to 87 mph, but at the cost of GPS positioning and auto-collision sensing.

At last comes the Sports mode, which came as a surprise to me. DJI calls it a “hybrid” of Normal and Manual mode with 60 mph the fastest it can travel.

Obstacle Avoidance

There’s no dearth of sensors to detect and avoid obstacles, rivaling high-end drones, all for under $999. This is just amazing!

DJI FPV includes an auxiliary bottom light, Smart Return to Home (RTH), Low Battery RTH, and forward and downward obstacle sensors to ensure a safe flight, even at high speeds.

It has also got an emergency brake and hover function. If something feels off, you can press a button on your remote to stop the drone within seconds, regardless of speed or mode.

Last but not least, the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) system alerts you to nearby planes and helicopters transmitting ADS-B signals, giving you time to steer clear.

What Other Customers Have to Say About DJI FPV?

“I purchased this drone (DJI FPV) a couple of weeks ago. No issues with shipment. Great little drone for a beginner. I must emphasize that I am a complete beginner and so these are just my thoughts. It’s so easy to use, I had my kids flying it within 30 minutes.”

How Do I Choose the Best Drone?

Choosing the best drone can be overwhelming with all the options out there. I also experienced it in my initial days.

To ease some of the load off your shoulders, here are six key factors you MUST consider when shopping for a drone. These will help ensure you find a drone that meets all your needs and delivers a fantastic flying experience, no matter what your expertise level is.

Price

First off, set a budget. Drones can range from affordable to pretty pricey. Think about how much you’re willing to spend before you start shopping. There are great options available at different price points, so you don’t have to break the bank to get a good drone.

Generally, higher-priced drones come with more features and better build quality, but you can still find some gems at lower prices if you know what you’re looking for.

Flight Distance

How far do you want your drone to fly? Some drones have limited ranges, while others can go the distance. If you’re planning on doing some serious exploring or capturing footage from afar, look for a drone with a long flight distance.

Most entry-level drones might have a range of about 100-300 meters, while more advanced models can fly several kilometers.

Size & Weight

Pay attention to the size and weight of the drone. If you’re new to flying drones, you might want to start with a smaller, lightweight model that’s easier to control. Smaller drones are also more portable, making them great for travel.

However, larger drones typically offer better stability and can handle stronger winds.

Battery Life

This is crucial! You don’t want your drone to die in the middle of an awesome flight. Look for drones with longer battery life. Most drones offer flight times between 15 to 30 minutes per charge. Also, consider getting extra batteries to extend your flying sessions.

Flight Performance

How well does the drone fly? Check out the drone’s stability, speed, and maneuverability. Look for features like GPS, altitude hold, and obstacle avoidance, which can make flying easier and more fun, especially for beginners. Read tons of online reviews and watch tutorial videos to see how the drone performs in real-world conditions.

Camera

If you’re into aerial photography or videography, the camera quality is a big deal. Shortlist drones with high-resolution cameras, good stabilization, and features like 4K video recording, HDR, and zoom.

Some premium drones even come with gimbals for smooth, professional-looking footage. Pay attention to the camera specs and sample footage before making your decision.

By keeping these factors in mind, you’ll be well on your way to finding the perfect drone that suits your needs and budget.
