I recently tried out the DJI Matrice 350 RTK for a small mapping and surveying project, and it left me amazed. 

One of the drone’s talking points is its 45MP camera, which captures high-resolution images with stunning clarity. This means you can create accurate maps and 3D models without losing even the slightest detail.

Whether you’re surveying large areas or focusing on specific geographic features, this camera provides the precision you need.

The 55-minute flight time is another advantage of this drone—all thanks to the TB65 Intelligent Flight Battery. This extended duration allows you to cover more ground without the constant need to swap out batteries.

With this much airtime per charge, you can complete multiple flights in a single session, which saves you valuable time and increases your overall productivity. 

Note: You can charge a TB65 Intelligent Flight Battery for up to 400 cycles, thus reducing the cost of a single flight.

I’m a huge fan of VTOL drones, and this fixed-wing WingtraOne Gen II is one of them. 

It features a Sony-powered 61 MP HD camera to capture sharp and clear pictures with a pixel density of up to 0.7 cm per pixel. No matter whether you’re working on a construction site, mapping a road, or even surveying a large industrial area, the WingtraOne Gen II won’t let you down! 

Another strong point of this GIS mapping drone is its massive flight time. With an airtime of 59 minutes, this drone can cover up to 460 hectares (1,140 acres) in a single flight. I’m not kidding!

To put this into perspective, other fixed-wing drones typically max out at around 220 hectares (540 acres), while multicopter drones only manage about 50 hectares (120 acres) per flight.

This significant coverage advantage means larger surveys in fewer flights and battery swaps, resulting in 11x faster data collection and less downtime in the field. 

The WingtraOne uses PPK (Post-Processed Kinematic) technology for precise positioning. Therefore, there’s no need to set up ground control points (GCPs) for accurate mapping.

Instead, just a few checkpoints are enough to verify your maps’ quality. This feature simplifies the process, as well as saves time in remote or hard-to-reach areas where setting up GCPs can be challenging.

The WingtraOne may not have an official IP rating, but it’s built to work in all kinds of weather. I found the WingtraOne handled winds up to 12 m/s (27 mph) and gusts up to 18 m/s (40 mph) without any issues.

So, you can confidently carry out mapping tasks even on windy days with “zero” worries of it being blown off course. Its sturdy design also keeps the camera safe, preventing any damage from dirt or debris, which extends the equipment’s life.

The VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) design of the WingtraOne gets it extra brownie points from me. It allows the drone to take off and land in tight spaces or rough terrain, where other drones might struggle. This feature is especially helpful in areas like forests, hills, or construction sites. 

Though the WingtraOne lacks obstacle avoidance, it’s still safe to fly, thanks to its automated safety checks and predictive self-diagnosis, which helps detect any issues before or during the flight. Plus, the flight planning app is user-friendly and allows you to import KML files for a seamless mission.

My Verdict

The WingtraOne Gen II is an ideal drone for large-scale mapping and surveying. Its high-quality camera, long flight time, and weather resistance make it suitable for professional surveyors who need reliable and accurate data. While you’ll miss obstacle avoidance, its robust design and advanced features fills that void.

The DJI Phantom 4 RTK is probably the most compact and accurate low-altitude mapping solution. 

Its camera houses a 1-inch, 20-megapixel sensor that captures very clear and detailed photos, enhancing the accuracy of your maps and 3D models.

One thing I noticed right away is the mechanical shutter, which helps to avoid any motion blur when the drone is moving and taking pictures simultaneously. This is a big plus for getting sharp images even while flying at a steady pace.

Overall, the camera quality is such that even small details on the ground are visible, thanks to a ground sample distance of 2.74 cm when flying at 100 meters.

The drone comes with a built-in RTK system that provides centimeter-level accuracy, which is crucial for tasks where precision matters, like surveying.

It uses a TimeSync feature that aligns the camera’s data with its GPS coordinates, so each image is positioned correctly. In addition, this RTK system is compatible with both real-time and post-processed data—giving you complete flexibility in handling different mapping projects.

Flying the Phantom 4 RTK is made simple by the DJI GS RTK app. I found it easy to plan flights for mapping, with different modes available, such as 2D and 3D mapping, as well as waypoints for more detailed coverage.

It was convenient to set up a mission with just a few clicks, and the built-in screen on the remote controller was bright enough to see clearly even in sunlight, which is great when working outdoors.

Another strong point is the transmission range. The drone uses a reliable OcuSync system that allows the camera’s video and photos to be sent back over a distance of up to 7 kilometers.

This means you can cover large areas without losing connection, making it ideal for big sites like farms or construction zones. In my testing, I was able to comfortably monitor the drone’s movements and capture data without any issues.

The Phantom 4 RTK has some drawbacks, though. To start with, it can only fly for up to 25-30 minutes on a single battery charge, which is quite average for a drone of this kind.

This makes it necessary to carry extra batteries to keep the work going, especially during extended hours. In windy conditions, the drone behaved nicely, which was reassuring for maintaining good quality data capture.

The obstacle sensors on the Phantom 4 RTK worked as per the company’s claims, spotting nearby objects and avoiding them smoothly without any extra effort from me.

This safety feature is useful when flying near trees, poles, or buildings, as it helps prevent crashes. However, it doesn’t have DJI’s full 360° obstacle detection, so don’t expect it to sense obstacles from every direction! 

My Verdict

Overall, the DJI Phantom 4 RTK is a powerful tool for anyone needing reliable and accurate mapping data. It combines high-quality imaging, smart flight planning, and precise GPS technology to make surveying easier and more efficient.

The only drawback might be the limited flight time for larger missions, but with a few spare batteries, it can handle most tasks with ease.

Another fixed-wing drone on the list is the eBee X from AgEagle Aerial Systems Inc. 

With the 20MP camera mounted right at the front of the fuselage, the drone captures aerial imagery with a wider perspective, similar to an FPV.

But what makes the eBee X really beat the competition is its ability to switch between different camera types, such as 3D, RGB, multispectral, and thermal, letting you adapt the drone to different mapping needs. 

This flexibility means you can easily get the data you need for tasks like creating 3D models or monitoring crops, all while ensuring a ground sampling distance as fine as 1.5 cm.

I tested the eBee X in every possible weather condition, and it stood firm in all of them. And why won’t it? AgEagle designed it to withstand rugged terrains, so it didn’t face issues when exposed to less-than-ideal environments.

The lightweight body, which weighs only 4.6 kg, allows it to be flown safely over people and in beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) in various regions, including Brazil and parts of Europe.

Additionally, it can cover up to 500 hectares in a single 90-minute flight, making it very efficient for big projects. The 3 km flight range, however, is very poor. 

Using the eBee X is also straightforward! The eMotion flight planning software that comes with it is easy to learn, even for beginners. It allows you to plan flights, set up automated missions, and ensure that the drone safely completes the job.

I found the automated self-checks before each flight reassuring, as they quickly verify that everything is ready to go. It’s also easy to start using the drone; you can launch it by hand and get it flying in just a few minutes. When not in use, the drone and its gear fit neatly into a backpack for quick storage.

For accuracy, the eBee X has built-in RTK and PPK systems. These systems provide very precise data, so there’s no need for GCPs.

This is helpful because it saves time while still achieving centimeter-level accuracy, which is essential for professional surveying. The drone can connect to different base stations, ensuring the data remains reliable.

The eBee X is built with safety in mind. Its structure is durable and shock-absorbent, with a specially designed underbelly made from reinforced materials.

This ensures that it can absorb some impacts without damage. Plus, it also has no hard plastic parts on the front, and the rear-facing motor design adds an extra layer of safety.

The drone features built-in FAA-approved Remote ID and other certifications, making it compliant with U.S. and European drone regulations. 

The obstacle avoidance system worked well in my experience, though it’s not as advanced as some multi-copter drones. It does help avoid major obstacles and adds a level of safety during flights.

However, if you need very advanced obstacle detection, you might find it a bit limited compared to drones that offer omnidirectional obstacle sensors.

    For example, if you’re surveying a big farmland or forest area, a fixed-wing drone can save you time with fewer battery changes.

  • Multi-Rotors (Quadcopters): These drones have multiple propellers and can hover in place. They’re great for smaller areas or areas that need detailed mapping.

    A quadcopter is suitable for surveying a construction site due to its ability to fly lower and capture detailed images.

In my experience, drones like the DJI Phantom 4 RTK, SenseFly eBee X, and DJI Matrice 300 RTK are some of the best for mapping. They tick all the boxes by offering high-resolution cameras, long flight times, and GPS accuracy.

There isn’t a straightforward answer to this question, as the charges for drone mapping depend on several factors, such as the area size, location, and level of data processing required.

Generally, rates range from $100 to $300 per hour, or higher. You must assess the specific requirements of each job to provide an accurate quote.

 For drone mapping, I make sure to have a high-quality drone, a high-resolution camera, and a good GPS system like RTK or PPK. Additionally, mapping software to process the data and extra batteries for longer flight times are no-miss.
