It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or a drone pilot with 5 years of experience or more; losing a drone can happen to anyone. It happened to me once and if I didn’t know some of the ways of how to find a lost drone, I would not have recovered it. So, how do you find the lost drone? Read on to find out how you can recover your lost drone and some mistakes to avoid.  How to Find a Lost Drone? Sometimes, it may take only a few minutes to find your lost drone based on your method. Read on to learn the best methods to find a lost drone fast. Follow the Flight Path Following the drone’s flight path may be an effective way to find your lost drone, but it is also one of the most tiring and potentially risky ways to try. Why?  It might be challenging to see the drone if you’re flying it in a forest, bush, or area with tall grass.  Hence, you might have to walk further into the bush or forest while looking for your drone, risking your life. To reduce risk and increase the chances of finding your drone, mark out the area where your drone got disconnected. Start your search at that point. It could be trapped in the bushes or trees.  Hence, it’s also essential to know how to get a drone out of a tree.   My drone got lost in an area with a lot of trees. But by marking out the area, I was able to position myself close to where it was, but I had to initiate other methods like using the “Find My Drone” method which I will discuss later. Now, following the flight path is only effective during the day, as tracing the drone at night might be difficult unless its lights are still on.  Check the Last Known Flight Logs One of the most effective ways to find a lost drone is by checking the flight logs. Each drone is created differently, but to give you an idea, I’ll guide you using the DJI drone.  After all, most people have this drone, and you might be one of them. Access the DJI App One of the best reasons for using the DJI App is that it gives you a map with satellite images, showing you the existing features near your drone’s last location.  These features make it easy to know where to find the drone.  Locate the GPS Coordinates Does your drone have a GPS Tracking system? The tracker can help you find the drone easily using the GPS coordinates. You can use your smartphone to find the coordinates.  So, put the battery in your controller and turn on the GPS’s last location. This method, though, requires a satellite connection between you and the drone.  Therefore, there should be no barriers between you and your drone, as they interfere with the radio waves or cellular signals. Consequently, there would be no tracking data. Or you could get inaccurate data.  If your drone doesn’t feature a GPS, you can use the satellite connection to know the actual drone’s location.  Use the ‘Find My Drone’ App Some drones, such as DJI, have the ‘Find My Drone’ feature. I know about this feature since I once used it on my Air 2S when it crashed. Assuming you have a DJI drone, here’s how to use the ‘Find My Drone’ option. As I mentioned earlier, my drone got lost in an area dense with trees, but it was not stuck in the trees. Instead, it fell to a thick undergrowth below the trees. Light didn’t help since it was during the day, but beep sounds really helped me find my drone since they are quite loud. But the lights will also help if it’s dark, as well as following the drone’s flight path. Scan the Area Using Another Drone If you know where the drone could be, use another one to scan the area. Whether during the day or night, another drone could easily see the lost drone’s flashlight.  However, your drone must have a camera and a transmitter to use it to look for the drone. The transmitter will send the captured footage to you so you know where the drone is. To cover a wide area and increase the chances of finding the drone, fly the drone you’re using in a systematic pattern. Use the ‘Return To Home’ Button Before you panic and spend much time looking for the lost drone, use the ‘Return to Home’ (RTH) button. As long as the connection between the drone isn’t lost, and the drone is in flight, it’s possible to use the RTH button. You can also set the automatic RTH feature for whenever the drone loses connection. So if you wait a few minutes, your drone might fly back automatically. If it doesn’t, start considering other methods of tracking it down. Use the Telemetry on the Drone’s Controller Telemetry information tells you which direction the drone flew and the distance so you can know how far you’re from it and which direction to take when looking for it.  It doesn’t matter if you were operating your drone using a physical remote controller or a smartphone, or any other electronic device, telemetry information is available on the Apps or screens. Better yet, if you can still connect with the drone, it becomes straightforward to find it because the nearer you get to the drone, the lower the distance becomes. Knowing you’re getting closer to the drone’s current location boosts your confidence.  When used with flight logs or coordinates, telemetry information can be incredibly effective in finding the drone, making it easy to know the direction the drone was taking when it got lost. Recently, at a parade I attended, we saw a buzzing police drone surveying the crowd. As a drone enthusiast, I was excited to see a quadcopter on “duty”! It also made me wonder – how long can a police drone stay in the air? The answer is anywhere between 40 minutes to one hour. This duration is influenced by a number of factors, including the drone model. Some drones, like the JOUAV surveillance drones, can stay in the air for a whopping 240 minutes! Police drones are increasingly employed to perform tasks like surveillance, search and rescue, traffic monitoring, investigation, etc. The police use different models depending on the task at hand. Let’s explore these law enforcement crafts and the factors impacting their flight duration. What Are Police Drones? Police drones are advanced UAVs equipped with sophisticated technology and high-definition cameras. They can hover for long durations and have the ability to see at night as well as detect heat signatures through thick foliage. The six applications of drones in law enforcement are: 1.    Surveillance and Monitoring – Using a single drone, large crowds can be monitored effortlessly from above. This reduces the manpower needed on the ground. It is also a more efficient way to oversee crowd dynamics. 2.    Crime Scene Investigation – With aerial photography, investigators can ensure that no piece of evidence is overlooked/tampered with. Below, I’m listing the factors that contribute to the robustness of these crafts: A.   Battery Technology The battery is the main source of power for the drone. Hence, it is an important determinant of the drone’s flight duration. Police drones are usually fitted with lithium polymer or lithium ion batteries which offer high energy density. These batteries are also lightweight and occupy less space. This keeps the overall weight of the drone low, thereby increasing flight time. But even the highest quality batteries offer a time-bound flight duration. To overcome this deficiency, hybrid and alternative fuel batteries are being explored.  More on this in subsequent paragraphs. B.   Drone Design and Weight Can the design and weight of police drones impact their flight duration? Certainly, the design of the drone contributes to its aerodynamic efficiency. The type of rotor in the drone design is a decisive element in its speed and airborne capabilities. ·  Multirotor drones are apt for surveying smaller areas like mines, construction sites, etc., They have the ability to hover and are easy to maneuver. ·  Fixed-wing drones are employed in patrolling as they can cover large distances. They can stay airborne for longer durations but are unfit for rugged terrain as they require a runway for takeoff. ·  Hybrid fixed-wing drones are the multitaskers. They can take off and land vertically (VTOL), cover large distances, and also hover! The weight of a drone is inversely proportional to its flight time. That’s because heavier drones need more power to keep them airborne. This depletes the battery faster, thereby offering lesser flight time. C.  Operational Factors Affecting Drone Flight Time Environmental and usage conditions significantly impact a drone’s ability to stay airborne. Flying at high altitudes or sudden changes in speed deplete the battery faster, thereby reducing flying time. Similarly, prolonged hovering, aggressive maneuvers, and abrupt stopping will make the battery exhaust faster.   The weather can be a battery drainer, too. Extreme temperatures, high winds, and humidity affect the battery performance and aerodynamic competence. Besides flight time, these factors can also mess with the drone’s sensitive inner machinery. You may be surprised to know this, but it’s true. The majority of the drones you come across on the internet are “non-waterproof.” Yes! Even the top-selling DJI models you go crazy about are vulnerable to water damage due to no default protection. Take the examples of Mini 3 Pro and Mavic 3. Luckily, it’s possible to make your quadcopter splashproof with a few DIY steps and confidently navigate the skies even when faced with adverse weather conditions, as discussed in this comprehensive guide.  So, let’s start.  Why Is Waterproofing Important for Drones? Hence, even a slight exposure to rain, mist, and accidental water splashes is enough to damage its internal circuitry and make the sensitive sensors malfunction. This is true for all consumer and professional models.  This is where waterproofing comes to your rescue. If yes, these waterproof sprays are exactly the same.  An optimal exterior waterproofing solution for your drone, these sprays work by forming a protective layer, or what I call a hydrophobic barrier, to repel water. Just give the spray can a nice shake and apply its “thin” layer across the entire drone body, as if you’re painting it.    Note: Don’t use a random waterproof spray on your drone’s circuitry. There are specialized waterproofing sprays for electronic components, like Aculon’s NanoProof® Series.  Conformal Coatings If you want a cost-effective waterproofing solution for your aircraft’s internal circuitry, conformal coatings are your best bet!  Simply put, a conformal coating is a breathable, protective coating of thin polymeric film. It’s applied to circuit boards and other electrical elements for 360° protection against moisture and other harsher conditions.  The best part? Conformal coatings can be applied in a number of ways, such as spraying, brushing, dip coating, and dispensing.  Silicone Sealants and Adhesives I’ve made several drones waterproof, many of mine and some of my pals. If certain points are the most difficult to deal with, they are access ports, seams, and cable entry points.  But not anymore!  Following one of my friend’s recommendations, I once tried flexible silicone-based sealants and adhesives. And guess what? The results were fantastic! I was able to reinforce the weak points and seal gaps in my drone’s body, ensuring reliable protection from water and temperature changes.  Internal Cable Management Let’s say you don’t favor using any waterproofing methods discussed so far. In such a scenario, strategically organizing the cables inside your drone can also contribute to its overall water resistance.  Just see that no cables are positioned in areas susceptible to water accumulation or seepage.  Component Replacement Last but not least, replacing the existing components with their waterproof alternatives (if available) is another good option.  For example, I’ve replaced the ESCs (Electronic Speed Controllers) and motors of all my drones with their waterproof substitutes.  Step-by-Step Guide to Waterproof a Drone Image Credit: Phantom Rain In this section, I’ll discuss the detailed steps to use conformal coatings to waterproof your drone.  The reason behind choosing this particular method is that it’ll optimally seal your unmanned aircraft’s vulnerable components, safeguarding them against moisture and enhancing their resilience in wet conditions.  Supplies Procedure These are the steps for you to follow.  Once you’ve gathered the above supplies, follow these steps:  Choose Between Silicone and Acrylic Conformal Coating Before we get into the actual process, you must decide between silicone and acrylic conformal coating to waterproof your drone. Although there’s no harm as such in using any of these, I personally prefer and recommend silicone ones.  This is because a silicone-based conformal coating is highly flexible and offers suitable protection from both extreme temperatures and moisture. It’s easy to remove as well.  On the other hand, the acrylic conformal coating lacks flexibility and is quite rigid. Thus, getting it off your drone later is a tough task! If you’re looking for the best silicone conformal coating, check out this product from MG Chemicals.    Disassemble Your Drone Now comes the trickiest part.  Put on your safety gloves and disassemble your beloved drone with the utmost care. Separate its PCB while leaving the connected wires untouched. Repeat this for the ESCs and FCs.  Tip: Remove the heatsink to access the PCB easily.  Clean the Electronic Components This particular step is highly important and, thus, a little bit time-consuming. With the help of a soft-bristled toothbrush dipped in isopropyl alcohol, gently start cleaning the sensitive electronic parts.  Doing this will make the silicone coating stick better to the parts, ensuring long-lasting protection.  Once the cleaning is done, let everything air dry. My friends would often mock my obsession with battery care. But in a few months, the ridicule turned to curiosity. That’s because my drone battery outlasted theirs and consistently performed better! Before delving into my tried and tested battery rituals, let’s answer the question- how long do drone batteries last? Eighteen months to 2 years is the expected lifetime. But this is subject to battery type, usage, and maintenance. A drone’s battery is its main source of power. It will impact the flight time as well as the overall performance of your drone. As such, battery health must never be taken lightly. If you want to learn how to extend drone battery life, then I’m here to help. Read on as I explain drone batteries and reveal the secrets to their long life. What Are The Factors Influencing Drone Battery Life? The answer to the question how long do drone batteries typically last cannot be direct. That’s because drone battery lifespan hinges on various elements. Let’s unravel these one by one to understand the factors affecting drone battery life. I will also be answering the question- What is the average lifespan of different types of drone batteries? A. Battery Type and Chemistry Currently, most drones use lithium-based rechargeable batteries. But for the sake of information, I will discuss the three main drone battery types below. ·      Lithium Polymer Battery (LiPo) The most commonly used battery at present is the LiPo battery. All DJI drones use it, although they are custom-made by the manufacturer for use in DJI drones. These batteries offer a high energy-to-weight ratio, which ranges between 260-270 wh/kg. They are lightweight, high-density, and rechargeable. All these qualities make them ideal for drones. The drawback is that these batteries are very high maintenance. They need proper care and handling to avoid damage. ·      Lithium Ion Battery (Li-ion) Li-ion batteries are often used in professional or industrial-grade drone models. They have a long lifespan and offer high energy density. Now you must be thinking – what are the differences between LiPo and Li-ion drone batteries? In Li-ion batteries, the electrolyte between the cathode and anode is a liquid. Meanwhile, in LiPo batteries, this electrolyte is a graphene polymer. You can gather more technical details on these two battery types here. ·      Nickel-Cadmium Battery (NiCd) In NiCd batteries, nickel oxide hydroxide and metallic cadmium are used as electrodes. They were widely used in older drone models but are now almost obsolete. They have a high discharge rate, and their capacity weakens over time if they are not fully discharged before recharging. B. Drone Model and Usage The type of drone and usage patterns also influence battery life. A professional-grade or industrial drone consumes more power than a regular drone. The weight of the drone model will also determine power consumption. Drones with payloads like cameras, gimbals, etc., are heavier in weight. More battery power will be needed to support the weight and keep the drone airborne. Usage refers to the manner and condition in which drones are flown. If you are an adventurous pilot, you must wonder – can flying conditions affect the lifespan of drone batteries? Yes, flying in extreme temperatures and inclement weather conditions negatively impacts the drone battery life. This is because batteries are very sensitive to heat. They can lose efficiency and capacity sooner if you fly or store the drone in high temperatures. Heavy rain, fog, and snow are also to be avoided as well if you care for your drone battery. The moisture can enter the battery compartment and corrode the nodes. This will cause your battery to age prematurely. If you frequently fly your drone in these conditions, the battery will wear and tear fast.  Understanding Drone Battery Capacity In scientific terms, battery capacity refers to the total amount of electricity generated by the electrochemical reactions in the battery. It is measured in ampere-hours (Ahr), watt-hours (Wh), or kilowatt-hours (kWh).  The higher the capacity rating, the longer a battery can power the device. Hence, the drone battery capacity and flight time are directly proportional. However, batteries with large capacity also tend to weigh more. And if the overall weight of the drone increases, its range reduces. So, besides capacity, the weight and energy density of batteries are also important considerations. Average Lifespan of Drone Batteries The expected battery lifetime varies depending on its type used in the drone. The life of batteries is measured in years or charge cycles. Li-ion and LiPo Batteries last around 2-3 years or 300-500 charge cycles. It is highly advised to replace batteries as soon as there is a drop in performance. How To Extend Drone Battery Life? Now for the tips, I promise you can put these to use to increase your battery life. Most of them are quick and easy to follow. Like they say, you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink. So, I’m sharing my treasured practices, but it all depends on how religiously you follow them! 1. Not to miss out on its accuracy and 100,000 times better data collection capabilities!  But how much does a drone survey actually cost? What factors determine its cost? Is it worth switching from manual to drone surveying?  In this article, I’ve answered all these questions. So, let’s get started without further ado.  How Much Does a Drone Survey Cost? To find out how much a drone survey costs, I decided to talk to some professional surveyors through my contacts.  Here’s what I found:  The average cost of a drone survey per acre is around $30 to $120. On the other hand, a complex survey that requires specialist equipment, like HDR cameras, LiDAR sensors, or thermal imaging cameras, can cost you up to $2000 to $5000, or even more! But I would like to remind you that these are only ballpark figures! As the surveyors also told me, the actual costs vary with several factors that come into play, as discussed next. How Is the Cost of a Drone Survey Determined? The following factors determine the overall cost of a drone survey:  Type of Drone The most important factor on which the majority of the cost of a drone survey depends is the type of drone to be used.  Typically, a larger drone with a more advanced camera setup and capabilities will cost more than a smaller model with a basic camera mounted.  Area to be Surveyed By ‘area to be surveyed,’ I mean not only its size but also its type. Is the plot to be surveyed on a mountainous terrain or densely forested territory? So, how long do drones last? The life of a drone is gauged by usage hours. An average drone will last between 150-800 hours of flying time. The large gap in the expected lifetime is because this is influenced by various aspects – the drone model, overall maintenance, battery care etc., to name a few. I could keep my DJI Mavic in pristine condition longer than most of my friends. Join me as I explain the factors influencing drone life and share some secrets to prolong it. Factors Influencing Drone Lifespan Below are some notable drone lifespan factors that can help you keep your drone in pristine flying condition. I’ll also discuss ways to optimize performance through care and maintenance tips. 1. Battery The battery is what powers up your drone, and this makes it a crucial component of drone health. It is important to use original and compatible batteries to avoid flying issues in the drone. Most mid-range drones can fly for around 15 minutes, provided the battery is in perfect condition. As the battery’s power decreases with usage, it will have an impact on the flight time. Another thing to note is the type of battery you are buying. I was advised by a friend to buy lithium-ion batteries for high-power-consuming devices. Since then, I’ve diligently followed this instruction, and it has proven to be a game-changer for me! Now you might question me – how long do drone batteries last? Well, lithium-ion batteries store more energy and last significantly longer than other batteries. Yes, they cost more, but the price is commensurate with the battery life. Below are a few tips that I diligently follow with all batteries in all my gadgets: –   Never expose your battery to extreme temperatures. Motor And Propeller Wear The drone propellers and motor are prone to wear and tear with each flight. Harsh weather, drone altitude, speed, and propeller design contribute to drones’ gradual deterioration. Let’s discuss some ways to extending drone motor and propeller life: –   Weather conditions like rains, strong winds, and fog put immense strain on the propellers, causing them to corrode or malfunction. –   Flying at high altitudes where the air density is lower forces the propellers to work more strenuously to generate the required thrust. –   Constantly flying at high speeds puts more strain on the propellers and subjects them to quicker wear and tear. –   Lastly, propellers that are designed incorrectly or have manufacturing defects are quicker to degrade. Now that we know what factors contribute to wear and tear on drone motors and propellers let’s focus on the solutions. To minimize propeller damage, it is advised to avoid aggressive maneuvers, visually inspect propellers after each flight, and practice regular maintenance.  Like the propellers, the motor is prone to degradation over time. Reduced performance, unusual sounds, and worn-out bearings are the tell-tale signs of motor damage.   Dirt & debris, corrosion, and demagnetization of the motors are some common causes of motor damage in drones. These can be averted to a large extent by periodic inspection and maintenance. Some ways to care for your drone’s motor are: –   Avoid flying near water or getting the drone wet.
