How to Register a Drone?

While drones are fun to fly, there are rules that govern their usage that you should be aware of. One of these regulations that is common in most regions requires you to register your drone before use. These requirements may vary depending on where you are, so we will cover the most common areas. So, how do you register a drone? In most regions, you will need to register a drone with the respective civil aviation agency and get a registration number which identifies your drone like a number plate identifies a car. Read on to learn how to register your drone if you are in the USA. How to register a drone in the USA Unless you’re flying a drone weighing less than 0.55 pounds under the Exception for Limited Recreational Operations, it’s mandatory to register it. However, you can’t fly a drone under Part 107 if registered under the Exception for Limited Recreational Flyers. Registering the drone takes only a few minutes, and you can do it from anywhere, online on the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) page. You should register drones weighing over 55 pounds with the FAA through mail. Otherwise, you’ll be subject to a jail term of up to 3 (three) years, criminal penalties of up to $250,000, or civil penalties of up to $27,500. What You Need to Register Your Drone The FAA Drone Registration Requirements How to Register a Drone Before you register your drone, there are a few things to remember: Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to register your drone. Step 1: Log in to FAA Drone Zone Step 2: Click ‘Create Account’ and enter the requested information. Create and confirm your password (passwords are case-sensitive). Step 3: Click ‘Launch Drone Owners and Pilots Dashboard’ to continue registering. Step 4: Next, click ‘Manage Device Inventory’ to register as a Part 107 pilot (unless you’re not registering as one). Step 5: Click ‘Add Device’ on the right-hand side, and provide the required information based on whether your drone broadcasts the ‘FAA Remote ID.’ Select ‘Yes’ if your drone broadcasts the Remote Identification (ID) and ‘No’ if it does not. On the ‘UAS TYPE,’ state how the drone broadcasts Remote Identification if it does. Otherwise, choose ‘Remote ID Broadcast Module’ if you bought a separate module for broadcasting the Remote ID. If your answer to the ‘Remote ID’ question is ‘No,’ then answer ‘Tradition UAS’ or ‘Homebuilt’ in the ‘UAS TYPE’ section. Suppose you’re uncertain whether your drone broadcasts Remote ID; contact your manufacturer or Google online based on your drone type. Select the company that manufactured your drone (check the box that was used to package your drone if you don’t remember). Fill out the drone’s serial number (it’s on your drone’s battery compartment). Provide a unique nickname for your drone and then fill out the drone model to complete the registration process and click ‘Add Device.’ Step 6: Provide your card details and make payment, upon which you’ll receive an email with the FAA drone registration Certificate. Drone Registration Cost Drone registration is renewed after three years and costs only $5 (per drone). The registration cost of all drones under the Exception for Limited Recreational Flyers is $5 and is renewable after three years.  Legal Requirements When Flying the Drone Upon successful registration, the FAA issues a Certificate, which you should always have when flying your drone. You can either have a digital or paper copy. If you rent out your drone or give it to a friend, they must also have the Certificate when flying it. Also, if the local, Federal, or State authorities ask for the Certificate of registration, you or the person in possession of the drone must issue it to them. Drone Labeling Requirements Registration Renewal Once your registration expires, please log in to your FAA drone zone account and renew it. You must use the email used initially when renewing your registration. If you have forgotten your password or have trouble logging in, reset the password by clicking on the ‘Forgot password’ option. How High Can Drones Fly?

Drones feature varying flight altitudes based on various factors, including their model, usage, country of use, and weight. So, while some drones can fly at a maximum height of 76,000 feet, others can only fly at 33,000 feet or less. Legally speaking, though, how high can drones fly? In most countries, the legal limit for flying drones is 400 feet. For example, in the U.S., the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) restricts drones from flying above 400 feet. You must obtain a waiver from the Federal Aviation Authorities to fly your plane above the 400-foot limit. The waiver should outline the flight details and the safety measures to be taken.  In this article, I’ll cover altitude limits based on where you live or want to visit and drones make, among other aspects. So, keep reading. Drone Altitude Concept Altitude in regards to drones is classified into two: ASL refers to location elevation, while AGL refers to the drone height above the launching zone. So, since the 400-foot maximum altitude starts at the ground level, if the drone takes off at a building that is 200 feet high, then the altitude limit becomes 200 feet Above Ground Level (AGL). How High Can Drones Fly? Some high-end consumer drones can fly above 400 feet; for example, some can fly at 1000 feet or higher. One such drone is the Zephyr, a solar-powered drone that flew at an altitude of 76,100 feet in 2021 for more than 18 days. While such powerful drones exist, the FAA requires high-end and low-end drones to maintain a maximum altitude of 400 feet. The restriction is meant to avert collisions between drones and manned aircraft whose minimum altitude is 500 feet. However, as a commercial drone pilot with an FAA Part 107 license, you may request a waiver to exceed the 400-foot limit AGL. This waiver allows commercial pilots to fly their drones above 400 feet when operating from a 400-foot structure during industrial equipment checks and tower inspections, among other activities. While at it, you need to fully know and understand all relevant laws and regulations that you should comply with when flying a drone above the 400-foot limit. While the manned aircraft is required to maintain clearance during such events, commercial drone pilots should also have the expertise and skills to navigate their drones to avoid collisions. On the other hand, a commercial pilot must submit a comprehensive operational flight plan that outlines the possible risks and preventive measures to take. It may take up to 90 days before the FAA approves the waiver. So, you need to be patient. What Is the Maximum Flight Height for a Drone at Night? The maximum flight height for drones at night is still 400 feet. Similar to day flights, commercial pilots still need FAA waivers to fly beyond 400 feet AGL and must demonstrate a high level of expertise to avoid accidents. However, all commercial and recreational drones must feature anti-collision lights for visibility by other manned or unmanned vehicles flying at night. What Is the Maximum Altitude a Drone Can Fly Based on Its Type? At the beginning of this write-up, I mentioned that the drone model also determines how far a drone can fly. So, in this section, I’ll discuss the maximum altitude of various drones, including hobbyist, military, toy, commercial, racing, and government drones. Keep reading. Hobbyist and Recreational Drones Pilots in this category fly drones for fun or as a hobby. Technically speaking, these drones may fly at 6,000 feet, which could be dangerous. Consequently, the FAA and state authorities require that recreational drones maintain a maximum height of 400 feet. So, even when flying from a building that is 300 feet tall, you can only fly at 100 feet AGL. Military Drones The highest a military drone can fly depends on its capabilities and size. Generally, military drones, also known as Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), are allowed to fly at low or high altitudes as long as pilots observe the flight rules and safety measures. So, a military drone can fly at the same altitude as a conventional aircraft. Hence, based on size, type, and mission, for example, gathering intelligence information and performing strategizing aerial assignments, UAVs can fly at 1,200 to 18,000 feet AGL. UAS’ service ceiling ranges between 50 to 60,000 feet.  According to the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), military drones are helpful in undertaking strategic, tactical, and operational activities. Hence, they’re grouped as follows: Group 1: Features an altitude of 1,200 feet AGL or more. Group 2: Features a flight altitude of 3,500 feet AGL and above. Group 3: Flies at 18,000-foot flight level (FL) or more. Group 4: Equally flies at 18,000-foot FL or higher Group 5: Flies at 18,000-foot FL or higher Toy Drones Generally meant for kids and beginner pilots, toy drones may only fly at 66 to 150 feet. The FAA equally regulates them, so safety measures must be observed. Commercial Drones As aforementioned, commercial drones can exceed the 400 feet altitude limit given that they have requested a waiver from the FAA. Caution must always be applied while undertaking commercial tasks such as photography, videography, and survey jobs. Racing Drones The maximum altitude for racing drones is 200 feet AGL. This low altitude is meant to ensure that pilots can see the drones and be able to control them effectively to avoid collisions during races. Government drones The government uses drones for surveillance, crowd monitoring during events, and search and rescue missions. Hence, these drones are powerful enough to fly at 11,200 feet AGL. However, government officials should ensure that humanity and animals are safe when operating their drones. What Is the Possible Risk of Flying a Drone Too High? Don’t exceed the 400-foot altitude limit if you don’t have a waiver. This restriction aims to prevent drone collisions with helicopters and planes that fly at 500 feet or higher. Hence, you must back up vital data before resetting the drone. Also, if you encounter an error after initiating the reset process, read the error message for details on resolving it. Otherwise, refer to the user manual or contact the drone company for help.  Below, I will guide you on how to reset a drone like a pro. Using the three mentioned methods: Read on. Reset Button Using the reset button to reset your drone is simple and stress-free. Nevertheless, based on the instructions in the manual guide, you may have to use the reset button and other additional methods for some drones. However, this method is simple; it takes only a few minutes to reset your drone. Power Button Software Most modern drones require software instead of a power button or reset button to factory reset. Such drones, though, require a mobile App or a computer to access the drone’s reset option, which is in its settings. Using the software provided by the manufacturer is a fast and stress-free method. Moreover, it takes only a few minutes to complete the reset process. The good thing is that the software is compatible with various Operating Systems (OS), including Mac and Windows. Besides, the software may also provide other tools necessary for troubleshooting your drone.  Also, using software to reset your drone eliminates software-related issues. Even so, you should only use the provided software by the manufacturer, as each model uses a different software for the reset process. How to Get a Drone Out of a Tree?

Even the most experienced drone pilots can tell you that drones crash all the time, and if you are flying in areas with several obstructions such as trees, chances are the drone will end up in a tree. Some causes of these could be underestimating the tree’s height when returning to home, ignoring battery depletion warnings, or not paying attention when flying. As a result, it’s important to know how to get a drone out of a tree.   Knowing how to get a drone out of a tree will save you lots of trouble and (probably) money. So, how do you get a drone out of a tree?  Ready to learn how to get your drone out of that tall tree?  Read on. How to Get a Drone Out of a Tree? First of all, don’t panic. Panicking might make it even harder to retrieve your drone. So, relax and determine which method I have listed below will help you get your drone back.  Please avoid using methods that would damage your drone. For example, avoid throwing something on the drone. It could easily crash.  Also, though many people recommend using a dart gun or a slingshot, these options are unsafe. Why? They increase the chances of the drone crashing.  So, here’s how to get a drone out of a tree. Safely.  Fly the Drone Out of the Tree If there’s a clear path, the battery has some power, and the drone responds to the given commands, try flying it out of the tree. While this should be your first step, you must be extra careful and gentle with the drone to avoid entangling it further.   This method works best if the branches have not entangled the drone completely and the propellers are not so close to the leaves or branches.  So, carefully ascertain the drone’s location to determine the best direction to fly it and how far to lift it to get it out of the tree. Climb the Tree Can you climb a tree without endangering your life? If you can, and the tree is strong enough to accommodate your weight, you can give this option a trial.  Even so, as you plan your way up the tree, plan your way back down the tree. Avoid climbing the tree while wearing loose clothes or shoes, as they might increase the chances of injury. Better still, use a climbing rope. However, be warned: Climbing a slippery or wet tree is dangerous. Also, avoid climbing tall trees if there’s no other person with you.  When the worst happens, and a branch snaps off, you could fall and get injured without anyone knowing it.  It’s also paramount to consider the location of the tree. Could you be trespassing or breaking any laws by climbing the tree?  If so, please call the necessary persons to aid with retrieving the drone. Alternatively, use a pole.  Use a Ladder Consider using a ladder if the tree is too tall for you to climb. Without a doubt, no one carries a ladder when going to fly a drone.  However, if you’re flying your drone in your locality or near a town, you can borrow, rent, or buy one.  Whatever the case, ensure the ladder is strong enough to hold your weight. Additionally, the ladder should be tall enough to reach the drone’s location successfully.  Place the ladder on a level footing. Also, ensure it’s well-balanced to avoid wobbling while you ascend.  To ensure you’re entirely safe, have someone to watch you and support the ladder while you’re on it. Once close to the drone, exercise maximum caution while reaching out to the branch where the drone is stuck.  If it’s challenging to reach out to that branch, additional tools such as a pole may help you to dislodge the drone. Otherwise, climb onto the branches near it to retrieve it if it is safe. Fish Your Drone Out of the Tree You can use a fishing line to get a drone out of a tree. Attach a weight to your fishing line.  You can use old socks to make a softball, a cricket ball, or a baseball. Start unwinding the fishing line, making sure that the straight line is twice or thrice the approximate distance of the drone from the ground.  Throw the cricket ball or whatever you have attached to the fishing line on the branch where the drone is stuck. Be careful not to hit the drone, as it could get damaged.  So, aim at the branches on the right or left of the drone. After the weight is on the branches, pull the line to shake them so they can lose the drone.  You can pile grass to create a safe landing place for the drone. This method needs lots of caution, accuracy, and patience.  Also, ensure that you maintain a safe distance to avoid getting hurt by the propellers in case the drone falls.  Poke the Drone Out of the Tree You can use a long, strong pole if the tree is not too tall. This is an excellent method if you don’t have a ladder, the tree is not strong enough to hold your weight, it is too wet to climb it, or you’re not physically fit to climb it.  However, to ensure that the drone is safe, place a heap of grass or clothes under the location where it is stuck so that it doesn’t crash when it falls from the tree.  You can also use a safety net to catch the drone safely. How to Connect a Drone to Your Phone?

If you want to adjust your drone’s settings on the go, stream live videos, or access flight data, you can easily do so by using your phone. However, you need to connect your drone to your phone. But do you know how to connect a drone to your phone?  You can do this with a cable provided by the drone manufacturer by connecting the drone to the controller, then linking the controller to the drone. Or you can connect to the drone through Bluetooth or WiFi signals.  How you connect to the drone varies depending on the drone you are using, so read on to learn more about the various ways you can connect your drone to a smartphone.  How to connect a DJI drone to your Smartphone Most DJI drones that use the DJI Fly app work the same way so the connection to the smartphone works the same for all of them. How to Connect Your Parrot drone to your Phone Assuming you have a Parrot Bebop drone, how do you connect it to your Android phone? It’s as easy as saying 1,2,3. Follow the steps below.  Your drone will beep once to mean the connection is successful. The LED lights at the back of the drone will also light. Finish the configuration settings on the FreeFlight Pro App and start flying your drone. How to Connect DJI Phantom 4 to Your Phone? As I’ve mentioned, drones are created differently. On the other hand, smartphones are also designed differently.  The Phantom 4 represents DJI’s older drones that use the DJI GO app. So, follow these steps if you’re using DJI Phantom 4. This App is available on Android (5.0 or newer version) and iOS phones. If you’re using a different drone, check the manual guide to know which App you need to download.  If, for example, you’re using a DJI Phantom 4 drone, the camera tab lights will be gray before configuration, and they will change to a different color after configuration. Now, use the USB cable to connect the drone to your smartphone.  Upon a successful connection, the camera tab lights will turn blue. Consistently tap on the ‘Next’ button and, based on your preferences, set up a transmitter name and configure a good video output.  Don’t use the ‘Beginner mode’ option if you’re an experienced pilot. Otherwise, tap it if you’re just starting to fly drones.  If you don’t have a DJI account, sign up for one; otherwise, if you have one, sign in to sync it to the drone.   Once the App setup is complete, connect your drone to the WiFi network to act as a wireless connection between the drone and your smartphone. Many people have seen drones flying over their yards or properties. It can be scary and annoying, especially if you value your privacy. And who doesn’t?  While sometimes it could be kids having fun with their drones, it could also be adults unaware of their drone use limits.  Or those who want to cross your borders intentionally. In such a case, can you take the drone down? You can! However, you must know how to legally take down a drone to avoid being sued.   So, what do you do when you notice that a drone is spying on you?  In this article, you will learn how drones can be taken down, your limits, and more.  How to Legally Take Down a Drone? Just like there are laws protecting your rights, there are also laws governing drone use. So, drone users understand the limits of flying their drones above your property or other illegal areas.  Civil aviation agencies, the state, and the local authorities are very clear on drone use laws, and anyone who does not abide by the given laws is subject to a fine or imprisonment.  So, the law allows you to take some legal actions against drones that: However, each country and state has a different set of laws. Drones can be a threat, which is why drone detection technology is crucial.  Now the question is, how to detect drones in the sky? Detecting a drone in the sky requires multiple technological tools and visual observation. The combination of numerous detection methods makes it effective and accurate.  In this article I will share with you the secrets of drone detection and why detecting them in the sky is crucial. How to Detect a Drone in the Sky?  I have listed four ways in which you can detect a drone in the sky. Let’s discuss every method in detail. While radar systems are quite expensive, daily maintenance can prolong their functionalities.  You might be wondering, are there limitations to radar-based drone detection? Sadly, yes, this type of technology is not effective all the time.  Acoustic Sensors You cannot detect all drones using radars. Acoustic sensors can detect drones that are invisible to radars or beyond RF links. The sensors operate in four steps Acoustic sensors are nothing but powerful microphones to detect drone activities. The technology picks up any drone sound during their flight. Beyond detecting its presence, it can also track its travel trajectory.
